Why does weed destroy my mental health now?

I didn't want to post this on the dark side because this issue is specific to cannabis. Now that I'm a bit older, all drug comedowns are a bit worse than they used to be. However, it seems like now, there is no smoking at all without many days of hell to pay afterwards. Recently I took a trip to Mexico and was surprised to find a weed dispensary in Mexico City. Being naive, I thought "why not try it out since I'm on vacation." What a huge mistake. I smoked more or less a gram a day, as well as consuming edibles a few days, for about a week straight. The problem with weed is that I have terrible delusions about my use during it. Every time I would go to the dispensary would be "the last time." Of course it wasn't for that week and I destroyed my mental health as a result. Currently I'm on day 2 of no weed and have been chain smoking cigarettes to try to combat the depressive and restless feelings. Although I don't think any verbal description does it justice. It is a very distinct unpleasant feeling that comes solely after weed use. It's like I want to jump out of my skin, the anhedonia is very real and I feel like I dirtied my consciousness. But like I said it's hard to describe in words.

For some reason I've continued to use weed despite horrible consequences, the comedowns are always bad, and I always feel ashamed of myself. From 16 to around 21, weed was a phenomenal escape from reality and I would still be active on it. Now at 29 it turns me into a lethargic vegetable, and the high itself is even littered with paranoid crappy thoughts. I genuinely don't understand why I do it, I imagine to try and recreate that euphoric space I got when I was younger. But those days are long gone. I've told myself I'm done with it for good, hopefully I stick to that notion this time.

What is it about weed that turns on so many people? For such a supposedly benign plant, it really can wreak havoc on me. Just my two cents.

i don't think the smoking cigarettes is going to help... just learn to relax if you can.. maybe take some yoga lessons or something. that's a good way to relieve stress and learn to breath if you can get a good instructor. having a good breathing patterns helps with withdrawl a lot, although most people don't get too much withdrawl from weed... if you can't get into yoga, just do any excersise you can till you get relaxed and can fall asleep.

some people's bodies just don't respond well to cannabis and sometimes they stop responding the same and it gets shitty. just the way it is. everyone is different.

i'm gonna throw this out there too... You said the comedowns are worse as you got older??? did you smoke cigarettes when you first stared using weed? cigarettes kind of fuck up my weed high. days after using alcohol can make some less pleasant highs for me too.

The amount in which the user chooses to consume within a set amount of time greatly defines the effects (both positive, recreational and negative) It sounds more like a self control issue there must be some reason you want to just get blasted when you do it especially considering you mention time off of weed (which to me suggests you wouldnt have a high tolerance to it either) so you are really just going for the classic head bury. Personally i dont find weed addictive, i do take breaks on and off over the years which have consisted of days, weeks and months (even years)

You are still going for that great escape, you are nearly 30 so with age usually comes improved self control and overall awareness and sense of what a substance is doing to you (although not always the case, personal circumstances come into play here greatly ) . to say weed is completely harmless is ignorant so im kinda with you on saying that weed can be a problem for some however it really is reflective on user issues and behaviour

I suggest trying to find out what your issues really are, the root cause of this lust for a binge and try to resolve that first before trying to convince yourself it is all because of weed .

I truly think the weed of today causes longer withdrawal than the weed of yesterday. I also think that's because of the Indica which is in everything. It makes sense since Indica does seem to make the actual high longer as well, with much more laziness and drowsiness a few hours later. However, this is totally a guess and suspicion on my part and is based on no factual foundation. I don't get more debilitating withdrawal now, but maybe more drawn out... and I think age is a factor, too.

I wanted to also add it can be helpful for mental health to add some CBD in the mix, it could work out well for you in this scenario because it might reduce some of that recreational feeling you go for . Also you can try to use weed as a reward only (this works well for some people)

No cigarettes are a recent development. I’m not usually a chain smoker. Socially sometimes

I feel there's more to the weed grown in Mexico. I had a similar experience too. I love Cali Herbs you sure to get the desired results you want.
Yep. Lots of south American weed is shitty 2% thc sprayed with synthetic shit and sold as dank.

^ Actual south American weed like say Acapulco gold is known for being good. Not as good as African strains but they are pretty good. Of course sprayed weed is shit its gonna be shit no matter where it comes from.

I don't think too many people could say much of anything about South American weed compared to US weed nowadays. Maybe if they lived in South America. South America doesn't export to any degree anymore. As a matter of fact, that would be an interesting read. If someone from South America is on the forum and has experience with US weed and S.A. weed both, I'd love to hear a comparison.

As to South American strains in America, who knows how much of any landrace is in anything anymore?
