It could be the high amounts of expectancy bias being put in tequila these days.

Isn't hops psychoactive? I thought that's the reason that beer seems to be more intoxicating per amount of alcohol consumed relative to spirits.

Hops is a sedative in copious amounts. The fact that there is some hops oil in beer may provide the characteristic "heavy, stoney" buzz that beer causes. That is just my opinion, however.
