Misc Why does diphenhydramine cause euphoria in therapeutic dosages?

I'm not talking about doses strong enough to make you delirious. I'm talking about normal, antihistamine doses like 50 mg or so. For me, it causes a pleasant drowsiness and body relaxation very vaguely similar to an opiate. If it is an antihistamine, why does it cause euphoria?

Hello,

I would say that It all comes down to body chemistry. Some antihistamines do have slightly anxiolytic effects. I personally do not feel any effects and certainly no euphoria, but every person is different.

Hope that helped a bit

Diphenhydramine doesn't, in general, directly cause euphoria. It does cause sedation though, which can be 'interpreted' depending on set and setting to be pleasant and relaxing.

Yeah... I think "euphoria" and diphenhydramine is a big stretch... I, and everyone I have talked to, would never compare it to an opiate.

It's a totally horrible feeling. Really uncomfortable and you want to crawl out of your skin. Pretty far from euphoric.

Yeah, the feeling can be seriously unpleasant and edgy. Strangely, it did sometimes give me a mild euphoria, though I was injecting it with subutex at the time. I wouldn't touch that shit now; it doesn't sedate me at all, just gives me that "prangy",nervy feeling.

lol diphenhydramine doesn't cause any euphoria in ANY dose. It sometimes causes drowsiness but nothing like an opiate either.

When I was younger and stupid enough to take a bunch to "trip," well, most of us who made that retarded decision knows it's no fun at all. Now, when I take therapeutic doses for allergies, I can feel really, really weird, like my brain remembers what it did to it. I can't take any amount no matter how low the dose and feel pleasant at all.

I have friends though, who like to take the recommended dose and it makes them feel calm and sleepy. I think a lot of times the word "euphoria" is overused. It may very well help you relax and be comfortably drowsy, however I can't see it making anybody feel euphoric. Euphoria is a pretty strong word.

Shit, that takes me back...around 17 or younger, I'd take ridiculous amounts of these things; up to 20 50 mg tablets a day for a while, along with lots of DHC and coffee and got pretty fucked up. The hangovers were terrible.

That's a common side effect after taking high doses of it. That's exactly what happens to me. After being a stupid kid and taking a shit load, thus having basically the worst experience ever, I can't even take normal doses without bringing back that feeling.

It's horrible horrible stuff.

Man, it makes you sleepy but unable to fall asleep, stuck in a body that is moving on its own, dry mouth but can't drink water and hope your soul crawls out of your mouth. This is not opiate euphoria. In our dreams.

Its great for sleeping while on opiates(that is all), that is my opinion. Usually I need to wait 2+ hours after getting high to sleep, even if I am nodding hard I still won't fall asleep, just keep getting close to it and waking up with myoclonic jerks. I also seem to get anxiety while trying to sleep if I am high on opiates. Take some diphenhydramine (usually only need like 1/2 a 25 mg or a little more) and lay down, the second it kicks in (20-30 mins) I am out cold, prob will stay down for 8 hours straight. But if I use it for more than 2 days straight I start needing more. So I like alternating with sleep aids, use DPH for 2 days then a benzo for 1, in a cycle like that. Plus I will try to not use a sleep aid at least 1 night of the week. If I don't use some sleep aid while on opiates I can't get a full nights sleep, tops 6 hours. And sometimes I lay in bed for hours trying to sleep, so if I got work in the morning I might only sleep a few hours.

I think its the anticholinergic effects that make it go well with opiates.

i never knew that dipenhydramine could cause euphoria..i have taken dipen for many years and never experienced euphoria or any mood lift from it.in fact, sometimes i almost get more orritable on it but it does sedate me so i can sleep..

Erm...wrong, im afraid mate.
Im not sure of the mech of action; it could be the affect on muscarinic receptors causing an increase in dopamine but euphoria is a stated side effect of high doses.
This shouldnt really be noticable in therapeutic doses but if your particulary sensitive...*shrugs*...maybe but its more likely that the mild sedation and slight effect on sert causing a mild mood lift combined to give you a feeling similar to euphoria.

I think.that dipenhydramine is very euphoric. Music sounds really good and I'm more into what I'm doing before I pass out. I don't smoke pot these days so its a nice alternative to a bedtime bowl. plus u get to sleep.

its the dopamine reuptake inhibition/ SSRI effects.

Y'all, I'm not talking about high doses. I'm talking about the normal, recommended dose. I'm not saying it feels EXACTLY like an opiate for me at all. But the pleasant body relaxation and drowsiness to me feels VERY VAGUELY somewhat like an opiate sort of feeling. Maybe it is just my own brain and body makeup. Judging by the other answers here, I guess I am unique in that respect. I've taken diphenhydramine nightly for many years as a sleep aid. And even though I've developed a bit of tolerance here and there, the effects have remained fairly consistent.

"its the dopamine reuptake inhibition/ SSRI effects."

I never knew it had influence in that type of way. Perhaps that is why. I'd appreciate it if you could provide me with more info. Thanks.

Diphenhydramine is a very weak serotonin reuptake inhibitor, it isn't relevant at "therapeutic" low doses. It isn't significantly active as a dopamine reuptake inhibitor either.

this is just a theory but i think that dope is commonly cut with diphenhydramine. because of this, users of heroin who have experienced this are reminded of the high when they take diphenhydramine seperately.

It's still used to cut dope. Euphoria from DPH??? That's insane. I've never felt anything remotely resembling euphoria whilst on any antihistamine by itself.
