Why does Codeine + feel better than Codeine on its own?

OK here goes...
I get the following OTC and would like to know why I prefer it to just Codeiene.

Each tablet contains:

Codeine Phosphate 15mg
Paracetamol 300mg
Phenylpropanolamine HCL 25mg
Phenyltoloxamine citrate 22mg

I can take 3 or 4 tablets and feel very relaxed and calm without feeling drowsy.

But if I take Codeine only the feeling isn't as pleasurable, even at higher doses.

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
SL

It makes sense, because it has other ingredients than just the codeine which are affecting your mind and body. Codeine combined with 3 other drugs is going to feel different/stronger than codeine by itself. The paracetamol is an analgesic (pain reliever); the phenylpropanolamine is a stimulant which releases epinephrine, norepinephrine, and dopamine; and the phenyltoloxamine is an antihistamine, sedative and analgesic and potentiates the codeine (and the paracetamol).
