for all you people that smoke do you smoke because u are addicted and cannot give up or is there any other reason cause realy there is nothing good about it at all other drugs will give you a buzz but not cigaratess. anyway for me I'd say I smoke cause I am addicted and I might be able to give up if I tried but I'm too lazy. what are your reasons.

i've been smoking for 4 years and i'd have to agree that im addicted now and i wish i never started, its got me unfit and i am just to lazy to try to give up

Well it's definitely a physical addiction - nicotine has almost the same failure rate of relapse as heroin when trying to kick the addiction. It's a very powerful drug.

It's also a psychological addiction. Because the behaviour is repeated so often - and often in tandem with another pleasurable activity (after sex, after meals, with coffee, with alcohol), little patterns develop and it's harder to give up. Ciggarettes permeate your life unlike just about any other drug.

When you give up ciggarettes you're not just giving up the physical addiction (the chemicals actually leave your body in the first week!). 90% of it is mental, tied to "triggers" you're used to. For example, you might always smoke in your car. Now driving a car feels weird without a ciggarette. A glass of wine or a pot of beer isn't quite the same without a ciggarette (I've seen people chewing on straws, or holding sticks). THOSE are the greatest hurdles.

So why do I do it? Because I feel used to it. Because it's become 'normal' to me. I wish to god it wasn't, but it is.

I think all smokers are morons.... not that i don't hang around with them, i think the act of smoking ciggarettes is moronic.. i saw my friend have a spazo attack the other day at ppl, all because he didn't have ciggarettes? it's fucking stupid.. why start? because it's follow the leader isn't it?

I HONESTLY have never taken up any drug, or influence (except computers from my father) from anyone... everything ive done, i've tried because I wanted too.. not because someone said "have a drag man" or "smoke a cone" or the latter "have a line, come on.. u know u want it"... My first lines of speed, i mannaged to pick some up from a dealer to sell, had it sittin in my freezer for a month, one day i decided, hey, i shud take some... same with anything.. and till this day, im yet to have a drag of a ciggarette...

Please anyone who does smoke (which from the ppl i know, is about 94%) don't be offended by my use of the word moron... i've just had a fight with the old lady and im shitty, but other than that, yeah, sorry.

Not offended per se, but I think it's a little hypocritical to attack the use of one drug whilst feeling superior about your use of another, don't you?

I realise you are talking about *reasons* you start, but seriously, you are kidding yourself if you think you are in the majority with YOUR reasons for starting your drugs of choice. Most people begin drug use because of friends. Who gave you your first e? Your first line? Most people would answer: a friend. Or: I saw my friends doing it. Why is smoking any different?

Very few people "just decide" to suddenly try a drug on their own. You, perhaps, are the unusual anomoly.

For me it wasn't about necessarily cool, it was about curiosity. What's so good about this? And belonging, I guess... in a way... all my friends did it, all the people in all the places we hung out in did it. But it quickly became more about addiction and lifestyle than anything else. Now I don't think it's 'cool', I don't think I ever did really.

Chill on the insults okay, this thread is a good one regarding addictive psychology... no-one here needs a lecture, we are all adults just having a discussion.

So true slm, although i explored myself by using alot of drugs bymyself before starting to use them with others, but your dead right.

Fair enuff, well stated... i didn't mean to insult people, just make my statement, i was in a particularly bad mood.. and it's better i don't edit it, as it is my opinion, regardless of the mood, it just would look and be read stupidly if i were to re-word it now... Unusual Anomaly, i like that :) could be a kind of new err... title... Smoking is a terrible addiction, one which most definately can be avoided with the right will power... i am for the least part, a lazy good for nothing, but not fat, bastard. I don't see myself as supirior, because for one reason or another, i still do drugs, as do X(regards to anyone who does drugs) to get high...

I am just DEAD AGAINST tobacco, in any form, i still smoke weed green, simply for the fact i hate tobacco, it's basically useless, to take an addiction, rather than a drug... i take mainly entheogens and hallucinogenic drugs, simply for the effects they produce, rather than a "need" thats my statement... Thanks for your opinion slm :)

i realised my smoking addiction was an extension of my wanting to die. In fact at that time all my addictions were based on that rationale. I didn't care enough my life to be healthy, i wanted my lungs to die and my body to rot etc etc. Anyway a moment of clarity later I pretty much stopped smoking after a pack a day, stopped the smack and started to live......

im a hardcore passive smoker, and i hate it!!! cant wait till clubs and pubs here in aus arnt allowed to smoke inside.

Why do I smoke? I smoke because, I basically enjoy it. While at the same time, not afraid to admit it is a filthy, or... as put by some *moronic* habit. But, that's all it is... merely a habit.
I completely understand why someone would resent the fact that their partner smokes though (obviously, more sympathy towards the non-smoker in the relaionship).

But... I still can't find anything wrong with an individual partaking in a habit, whether it be filthy, carcinogenic to that individual's health, or whatever... so long as they are considerate towards others health and well-being.

In a way, I am kind of pissed off about the whole banning in public bars thing. I mean... they could always have a seperate "non-smoker's lounge" at most venues, ie; Pubs, Football grounds, etc...
But, then... I'm a smoker myself and couldn't bare going into those divey chinese restaraunts, where they were completely free to smoke anywhere (including at the dinner table whilst EATING!!), man... I couldn't take that shit and have to go outside for a "breather" every so many minutes... and that's coming from a smoker (smoke between 5-15cigs a day, myself.)

i really like the community/sharing sort of side... if your mate hes no smokes you can let him bum them off ya for a while... theyre relatively cheap but as a smoker your doing him a HUGE favour... its nice to stop and have a smoke with someone... helps convesation comfortability i think. you have something in your hand to plau with while you talk etc...

also its a nice way to break a social setting up, "just gonna have a smoke" then you change environmets for a while and its like a fresh brain.

and i really like smoking (anything) ... blowing smoke out of your mouth is hell cool ;) makes you feel like a dragon or sumthin..

but yeah, im also addicted to nicotine which is a bitch... been smoking 2 years or so now, i think id better have a serious stab at quittin, but ill probably need to change my lifestyle at the same time to avoid mental triggers...

Smoking may be BAD for you but it sure is ENJOYABLE!

At least that's what it says on my pack of menthol papers. :D It's so true for me, but I manage to keep it down to 3-5 a day. I've just finished a bag of Drum with about 10 rollies and 10 Marlboro reds left and haven't bothered restocking. I might give up except for a pack of menthols when I'm on the pingers, maybe a cigar for new years.

Dirty Smokers

funny... the smokers yet again outway the non smokers, does someone wanna start a poll? i think statistics in this might make people realise... whilst smoking is still cosidered bad, it is still considered "right" and "normal"...

Personally one would think something so filthy, should be downright illegal, but the government, who seems to try and stop ppl smoking just lays around and rolls in the taxes... its a fucking travesty that needs to be stopped.

The other problem that arises is the amount of rubbish and polution you smokers cause? don't you realise that most of the rubbish you see on the city street is caused by your disgusting habit? at least throw your fucking buts in a bin! It's filthy, further more, smoking in toilets or the bathroom? IT FUCKING STINKS! i still remember the high school toilets, they fucking reek of dirty ciggarette...

So people, keep in mind, your not at all as considerate as your make yourselves out to be, and try a little bit harder, by making that walk to the bin, or not lighting up your ciggarette in the non-smoking room in the local train station! (Oh i see that wayyyy to often, its fucking terrible, a big sign that says NO SMOKING, and these dirty fucks are poisoning my lungs!)

There inlies my point, without rage.
----EDIT----
Also another thing, please DONT give children ciggarettes, especially when the ratty looking 10 yr old knocks on the doorstep for mum, who is "sick in bed"... you know the kid plans to smoke it... just don't give ciggies to kids, it's wrong.

Thanks, and party safe

I've smoked on and off (6-12 months on, then 6-12 months off) for the past 5-6 years, and would not say I am physically addicted, however I probably am psychologically.

I would attribute my ability to stop smoking when I want, to smoking 'rollies' (Bank, Port Royal, Drum, etc), which I find are far less addictive. I am now however on the Taylors.

I'd class myself as a social smoker. I never feel the need to have a ciggie by myself, however, if I am with at least one other smoker, AND have an alcoholic drink in my hand, then I will want a ciggarette.

Why? I think it is because I find it compliments the drink, and also gives me something to do, saves me from the boredom that might engulf me, if I wasn't smoking a cig :\

Pretty poor reason I suppose, but its all that springs to mind when I pose the question to myself.

Hmm... interesting...

Why mask your thoughts and feelings by having a ciggarette? honestly, not being insulting, but i find that a really weak excuse... Sort of reminds me of a mate who as i would say used to "forget to feed his pet cancer"...

Yeah i get a head spin when i have the odd ciggie with my beer or E or whatever else in a social situation. Used to like the head spin but now just think its lame.

Zaineaol... just curious, but how do you feel about heroin addicts?

Hardcore heroin addicts don't take heroin to get 'high' anymore... it ceases to work that way. They have to take it to feel normal - ie. not sick.

There's a lot of parallels really. Sure, we don't smoke for any kind of 'high', but addiction isn't always about the high... at least not after a while. It's about being physically and psychologically hooked to something that has interwoven itself with your being.

You know - I think it's strange that a drug so addictive and deadly as nicotine is legal, too (and you could almost say the same thing about alcohol, and gambling). There's a lot of hypocricies in society really ;)

I also abhor smokers who have no respect for their fellow non-smokers - you're right, not all of us are as considerate as we say, but then again, many are. I could stereotype marijana use in the same way you've sterotyped nicotine use, because I see it as an incredibly destructive drug, which takes away sociability, motivation and many other things, including short term memory and sex drive (from my personal experience with boyfriends who've been pot addicts).

I don't see the reason behind that high. It wrecks your lungs and health almost as much as smoking ciggarettes does. And it can be just as hard to quit. But I'd never lump ALL bong smokers in the one category, because I've learned enough from bluelight to know that there are some people who can obviously handle it and lead productive lives and sustain good relationships. Heh... I just wish I'd come across those people in real life :D

Good conversation.
