Why do you smoke tobacco?

yeah i think the majority of people start due to social pressure or self-conscious awareness in regard to your peers.
The only people who continue are those who are addicted.
including me.
You don't think about the long-term when your say, in your early twenties.
There's always the denial in your mind, either through complete ignorance, or through self-justification for whatever reason, the security in the knowledge that "one day" you'll quit. Like all substance consumption, it's not gonna last forever eh?
Well "one day" never comes ladies and gentlemen.
And as you get older and older it gets harder and harder to justify the habit.
You start losing people to it, my grandfather, my mother-in-law, some colleagues, an old high school friend etc. I guarantee, it will happen to you in your life time, you will lose people to smoking related diseases.
You know the most stupid thing, the only reason why it isn't worth it? why i resent, not being an addict as such, just being addicted to Nicoteen.
Because unlike other drugs, it has NO beneficial effects whatsoever! NONE! Zip. squat. fuck all.
The first time you smoked.... was that pleasant? No. You thought you were gonna hurl it was so disgusting. it's a poison. If ALL the nicoteen in a pack of smokes was consumed at any one time, hypotheticlly, it would kill you.
People report a feeling of "relaxation" or that smoking helps with anxiety or stress.
Well, no it doesn't.
The fact is is that you have to force yourself to become an addict, no matter how little you smoke.
Now when your body is in withdrawal from nicoteen, stressful or anxious symptoms occur or are magnified, and the only relief is by feeding that craving, however subtle that craving may be. the feeling of relaxation, is just redosing on nicoteen so that your body resumes to it's normal working order.
So effectively, you are smoking just to feel like a non-smoker does all the time.
No benefit whatsoever.
Man when i'm 60 years old and retired, i'm gonna develop a nice, gentle, fluffy addiction to opiates, yep im gonna actually create that addiction, because it has a point. it feels fucking good. And contrary to popular belief, is a lot easier to contain, and a lot less harmful than smoking.
I hope to god i'm not still smoking when i'm old.
And i hope to god i don't die from smoking related illness in the disgusting, debilitating, agonising, and humiliating way that i've seen others pass on.
What a load of fucking arse.

Many smokers claim they can stop any time, or that they aren't so addicted, or don't smoke that much.
If that's the case, Give it up while you can man.
You will fucking thank yourself.
And you will eternally kick yourself if you don't.
If you wanna be an addict, be addicted to something that feels fucking good. whatever it is. smack, crack, weed, amps, chocolate, whacking off, whatever man. whatever floats your boat.
Cause if your floating your boat and getting your rocks off, whilst enduring some health issues. well fair enough.
Thats a fair trade off.
Thats your deal.
But there's nothing as pointlessly crap as cigarrette addiction.
It's a lose lose lose situation.

If it wasn't for my fear of becoming an outspoken self-proclaimed wanker of a non-smoker, i'd quit tomorrow. Fact is it makes me cool. way cool.
In the same way that shitting the bed is cool.

forgive me for the post.
I can't bear to read it myself.
Fact is,. it's the truth.
And if i risk sounding like a right negative prick then so be it. Cause if one person. just one. reads my post and quits while their ahead, then it'll all be worth it. too late for me.

I ALWAYS have to have smoke. I smoke a pack a day and im out right now at 9:25 pacific time. So if you have an ashtray with a lot of butts in it you can do what I do when im out. Buy a cheap (or nice) pipe, empty all your butts and smoke the tobacco. Takes less time and tobacco to get my fix and its strong as hell

I don't smoke that often, but I can see why some people do. Tobacco does taste pretty good, and you feel pretty cool smoking a cig. Luckily I don't have enough money for them.

Really good post DJ, sums pretty much up what smoking is about.
Yesterday evening I wrote that I am out of smokes... Now I had one and it made me feel fucking crap. I still had it though.

How many people do you (did you) know that are dying or died of cigarette related illness? Sure cancer can have other reasons but just think of the ones were you think it might be because of smoking.

I am 27 and I can think of 4 people I knew that died of smoking.... Well pretty sure it's cause of smoking. And one that is actually dying of it at the moment.

i just love it. im an addict straight up. im addicted to anything and everything that makes me feel good for any amount of time.

i like smoking. and i like drugs. the two together ==D

most of the tobacco i ingest is through blunts, but i do enjoy cigarettes when i am high or drunk. sober i find cigarettes taste disgusting and make you smell like shit, and i never smoke fucking spliffs!

Actor George Burns was smoking cigars @ close to 100 years old. He didn't die of cancer. What about all the people that DO NOT get cancer from smoking?

You are right. Not every smoker gets cancer. However, that's kinda clutching to straws in my opinion. Cancer has looooots of reasons but smoking definitely doesn't increase your health and chance of not getting it. Cancer is not my biggest problem with smoking - my problem is the addiction, the stink, the money and the health. Somebody wrote it before, there is just no win in smoking.

Sorry, I keep on banging on about all the negative aspects of smoking. I guess it's cause I am really fed up with it and hate it quite a lot. Guess it's time to stop soon.

Because I love tobacco, I'm not oakie or redneck even white by any means. But, both my mom and pops side were straight redneck and I grew up around dip chewing tobacco and cigarettes.

I started dippin when I was twelve had my first cig at thirteen (Marlboro Red worst cig ever)

I really started smoking alot when I was seventeen while I never really quit dippin and chewing I smoke more than I use smokeless now.

Id say my favorite cigs are unfiltered but, if I have to I will buy filtered cigs my fav brands are.

American Spirit, Lucky Strikes, Pall Mall, Marlboro 27's (when Im broke) Camel Menthols, Djarum Blacks (have to be ordered online now unless you like the cigarillos).

Yeah Dip is huge in the south. I tried Dip but my lips are sensitive to leaving that skoal under my lip. Isn't Dip made with shards of glass to get the tobacco through the mucous membranes? I'd rather smoke a plain old cigarette. IMO I find with 2 grams of UEI kratom a cigarette or 2 or 3 go a very, very long way. I love how strong kratom makes cigarettes feel.

Im addicted, and im not ready to quit. I love cigs.

However I've heard if you quit before the age of 26 then you will be ok, since your body can repair the damage done. I'll quit before then.

heh I dunno about that^^
I smoked coz I thought it was fuckin' cool, blowing out smoke/rings etc..
But the novelty aspect soon wore off, I realised that my body does not enjoy it or get addicted to it the same as others do, I can smoke say maybe 20 packs worth, & then out of nowhere, simply stop for an extended period of time/months, I could start & stop whenever on my choice.
I know only one other person who can do this too.
One things for certain though, we both have very addictive behaviours, we're suckers for drugs that actually work, & sure as hell know what addiction truly means.
Also, even at 25, I still don't appreciate the taste of alcohol one bit, so I wont drink it. strange.

I don't know how true this is. When my mom was dying from lung cancer, the doctor did tell me that if she quit in her 20s it probably wouldn't have happened, and now that I'm pushing 24 I really want to quit. I think its not so much how old you are, but for how long/how much you've smoked. I will quit in the next few months preferably, I'd like to turn 24 and no longer have this shitty addiction that costs way too much money and will long term negatively effect my health.

Yeah, smoking doesn't necessarily cause cancer, but COPD is extremely likely. From what I've heard, people who have to live with it for a long time wish they'd just get cancer and die since it's so miserable. So, cancer isn't the only thing to be afraid of. Plus for women, especially those with the pre-cervical cancer HPV, your risk increases from smoking...so lung/throat cancers aren't the only thing you really need to worry about.

why do i smoke?

Because im addicted. I smoke about 20 a day which i think counts as quite alot, fucking loads considering im 18 so by rights shouldnt be that dependant.

I started smoking when i was 11, cant even remember why really peer pressure or something, and i carry on because im addicted, i want to give up but the reason i dont is because i have come to enjoy the social aspect of it. Since the smoking ban all smokers at the pub get to know each other etc. Most of the people ive met through the pub i met in the smoking terrace.

when im high i smoke like theres no tomorrow, because yea smoking on stims feels amazing, and smoking when im on a comedown makes me feel better. If i could go back in time to the days when i only smoked two or three a day, id stop and not make the same mistake again., i just hope i wont be saying in 20 years time i wish i could go back to when i smoked 20 a day ...
