here's my take:
simple answer:
for the most part just to have fun. I like hedonism - that's why I work.
more complicated, perhaps pretentious answer
- well getting high on a more or less regular (but not abusive) basis gives me a sense of being, well, different from everybody else. Yes, I know there are countless numbers of people who do more drugs far more frequently than I do. But still I imagine regular drug users in general are a minority.
- I'll admit: it makes me feel like a rebel and it makes me feel "cool".
- My top preference is for drugs that put me in a headspace which:
1. is enjoyable and comfortable enough to live with and doesn't get me feeling "fucked up"
2. doesn't land me in some cheesy spiritual or lovey-dovey trip
3. is sustainable (that is, I can get the drug whenever I want it and for a reasonable price)
4. Makes me feel relaxed, secure, and confident but not arrogant or cocky. Feeling so makes me less inhabited and more outgoing.
5. Blunts emotional response so that I can comment on my environment objectively and intelligently.
6. Is conducive to (what I consider) good writing.
7. can be easily concealed from others. I hate being visibly high around strangers or people who aren't high.
Opiates fit the bill. But most of them are expensive and not easily available ("junk is not a kick it's a lifestyle" - W.S. Burroughs). Codeine seems to be the only one that is easily available (heck, OTC in Canada) and for cheap.
- another preference is psychedelics - i think they're great for demented fun ( I rarely get spiritual on acid/shrooms whatever - its just not in me) and I believe it helps me notice connections between things not obviously connected (even when sober)
- and as for other drugs, I do them because I like the roller coaster ride - its fun.
