Why do some people stalk or are stalkers? What's going on in mind?

I remember as a teenager once reading in the mirror about a creepy stalker who stalked this shy girl, sending her creepy letters through post, when caught, the police asked him why he stalked her, he's said I didn't love her nor hate her, I just wanted to kill her! So what goes though the mind of the stalker or why they stalk like this?

Call me old fashion but I think that I'm in the majority of people here who would prefer to murder someone we know, not a complete stranger.
