Why do people tend to see bugs when the hallucinate?

A lot of my friends, and people I've talked to say that when they trip, or take any drug that makes them hallucinate, they tend to see bugs or spiders. Is there any scientific reason for this? Or why do you think this happens?

I have my theorys about it. The basis of everything is geometric shapes and thats the basis of visuals right. When you get into a bad state of mind while tripping how hard is it to start thinking that blob looks like a giant neon spider until FUUUUU- there are an army of psychedelic spiders coming at you. Most people are afraid of insects so this theory isnt that far fetched imo.

It's an archetype that is deep in the human consciousness. Psychotic and delirious people very often hallucinate bugs. Delusional parasitosis, q.v.
