Looking at the old threads here why do lot of people here blame Richard M Nixon when it was President Lyndon Baines Johnson who started it!! Yea it was Richard M Nixon who made the DEA in July 1, 1973; 46 years ago base on wikipedia info when the DEA was made.

But it was President Lyndon Baines Johnson who started it but Richard M Nixon got it going got the war on drugs.

But in 1920 you had the alcohol prohibition and in 1900 the birth of big government in the US.

And it was Theodore Roosevelt who was a trust buster got the Pure Food and Drug Act, which established the Food and Drug Administration to regulate food safety, and the Hepburn Act, which increased the regulatory power of the Interstate Commerce Commission. His "Square Deal" included regulation of railroad rates and pure foods and drugs; he saw it as a fair deal for both the average citizen and the businessmen.

So some of this birth of big government in the US go back to Theodore Roosevelt and started taking socialism with his regulatory powers. After 1906, he moved to the left, attacking big business, proposing a welfare state, and supporting labor unions.

The US was never the same like the 19th century .

Any ways I'm sure there are other people here who understand history that would clear that up.

But man I get so mad reading it was Richard M Nixon got it going when Lyndon Baines Johnson who started it and Richard M Nixon got it going.

Personally I'm much more angry at the politicians who have continued the war on drugs long after its been established to be doing so much harm than I am the people who started it.

Sometimes you take a course of action that turns out to be a mistake, that's unfortunate. But continuing that course of action after you know it's a mistake that's killing people is downright criminal.

So forget Nixon, forget lbj. Everyone since then is even more guilty.

The war on drugs is billion dollar industry just like the military industrial complex it some thing when you put in power you not likely to disrupt billion dollar industry.

You can go back even farther.

French winemakers getting absinthe banned.

Taxmen limiting the production of Scotch Whiskey.

Hell, Jews banning pork (I acknowledge there was probably a pretty good reason for it at the time).

Always someone out to spoil your good time.

The 1920 alcohol prohibition probably set the stage afterwards for other things to come.

I guess the 19th century was more wiled wiled west in the US with the government.

The thing is, legal drugs could also be a billion dollar industry. In a sense it already is. We probably shouldn't do it with some of the more dangerous drugs. But certainly with others like cannabis.

The problem is inertia.

The problem is drugs where legal in the past before the FDA people had medical problems and doctors would give Cocaine and heroin it made you better but the problem did not go away. This lead to FDA to make sure what they claim drugs can do work and what the doctor or pharmaceutical industry was saying is true and work.

So this when they ban drugs.

It not just money but jobs like police, detective, federal agent, courts, prisons, jails and probation office so on.
