Why do people say appearance doesn't matter for men?

When it does? Maybe not in the same way (i.e. women aren't sexually stimulated by a random image of a hot man) but the reality is that you ain't gonna see a guy from different races marrying different socioeconomic status. You also seldom see a short guy with a taller woman.
 
Yea, like every time I see a gorgeous, hot young lady walking arm and arm down the beach with a severely overweight, middle to older age man, I always think - That man is rich or maybe he's packing a foot-long. And I'd be willing to bet I'd be right 99 - 100% of the time!
 
this is so random i don't know what kind of woman goes for a man wearing torn clothes / covered in dirt/ looks like he just gave himself an enema but you know, some women aren't too picky either i think it's simply that the standards are lower for men's looks
..you have to take into account what kind of enviroment you're walking into
ain't gonna look good in a fancy restaurant wearing kaki's with a torn shirt lol.

Because they are absolutely, 100%, full of shit.
Appearance matters just as much for men as for women.

A fair amount of people I've heard say "women don't care about a mans looks, moreso his personality".

But you know why that's bs. one of my friends who I immediately thought looked cute (i'm bi), said to me that he had gotten a bj from two girls in secondary school. I asked how he pulled two girls that quick and he said "They all approached me in a nightclub".

You have to be physically attracted so looks matter, but after that initial attraction ther has to be more like personality.
Goes both ways, i would never have met my now boyfriend because he started talking to me because he thought i was hot and vice versa. Our common interest and personalities are what keeps us together because in 20 years were all ugly
 
you're not wrong, but then there are ways to preserve yourself for your partner. ugly is applied far too frequently.

appearance is yet again, an optical illusion, people could be considered neutral until you decide you're wanting to propose a partner equation erupt between you.

afaict the other common reason for this to happen is that guys will often stop taking care of their bodies after marriage/a long enough relationship but his wife does not (men seem to find this less intrinsically rewarding)

this, incidentally, was a factor in the failure of my parents' marriage, which may bias me a little
