Miscellaneous Why do geometric patterns appear so often in visual art and nature?

From spirals in plants to repeating patterns in architecture, geometry is everywhere. What explains our fascination with symmetry, fractals, and repetition?

Are these patterns especially appealing because of how our visual system works, or is there more to it?

Fascinating topic, recently saw an NDE where the person got the impression when out of his body that they were watching geometry dancing. There is something to the question. I know when tripping these patterns can look like hallways and all kinds of dancing patterns. And on DMT you can shoot right through some of those portals it seems.

I think it is way more than that's how vision works. They blend, merge, create, etc.. Seems beyond a vision thing. More of a Nature thing.

sure our visual systems pop out features, initially what moves pops, but also that which has an edge pops, and curves or pathways pop in the way of figure separating from background.
regular geometries are natural outcomes of cell growth, division, aging, expansion, maturation...
so these lovely mathematical abstractions have real expressions in life as well as in our perceptive triggers.

while tripping I like to revisit this question and watch what gets my attention, which is usually what changes in the moment, but also that which is shaped "interestingly"
bilaterality is often so gorgeous, like butterflies and orchids etc.

Nicely put, I knew it. Natural outcomes. And then we perceive it. But wow is that far reaching.
