Why do different strains and varieties of cannabis have different aromas?

I know that sativas and indicas have different scents, but why? I've come across stuff that smelled like mint, like pine, sweet, musty, fruity, fishy, and even like potpouri. What gives different strains different smells?

Not sure about the smell, i've had stuff that smelled exactly like fruit and it was one of the best i've had. dont know the strain but a family member grew it, very sativa like. I think maybe something to do with breeders cross pollinating plants? my uncle used to experiment with such things, not sure how it turned out lol.

its all in the genetics bred into the plant, also curing has a huge effect on smell and taste, how it was grown (indoor vs outdoor) take all the various indicas and sativas and ruderali and who knows what you can come up with
