Why did chemical X change color? And is it still safe?

So my cat was at a festival many months back and acquired some psilly pills, they were a peachish, tanish, kind of off-brown colored powder/crystal in a capsule, and after not a very long amount of time (a month or 2) I noticed the powder/crystals have kind of conglomerated inside and gotten dark brown almost black like. This has also happened to an MDMA analogue my cat had gotten, which is now dark brown but didn't sort of melt together the way psyilly pills did, and are still sitting around for safety. Any info on this would be great, my cat keeps his stuff locked away pretty tight in baggies and jars and never takes it out just for fun. Is this just some oxidation from air or moisture getting into the capsules? And are they still ok to take, because my cats girlfriend really wants to try them!

I feel very sorry for your cat.

Btw, it's hard to tell with details like this but seems like oxidation indeed. Psilocin (is that "psilly"?) is not very stable, so it should be degraded somewhat. For optimal storage make sure they're in your refrigerator or freezer, and amber vials seem like the best option. If you take them out you should let them reach room temperature again otherwise the moist might destroy them after all.

And we can't really say anything about the MDMA analogue until you give us the compound name.

p.s Next time you store chems maybe take a look at the Storage Thread? Just so things like that won't happen in the future (well, psilocin is a tough one though)

Ruh roh, so basically they may very welly be no good? Is it worth trying anyway? And I assume Psilocin yes, very very small capsules too. Is it dangerous to try them if they've degraded? As for the analogue my best guess is MDA but I have not tested it, but took one when it was fresher and it was real real nice!

No the Psilocin should be fine, though less potent than before. Could be that they won't work but it's not like you'll die from taking them.

If it's MDA I'd find that very strange, because I thought all the MDxx's were extremely stable. If you live in one of the nicer countries regarding drug use then a proper drug test shouldn't be that expensive. Over here you can have it done for a tenner or so (euros), which would be the most accurate and could tell you if there are any impurities/degradations. If you live in the US though, a Marquis test should be fine.

Sorry we do not support speculation of this sort. Trying to guess what the reason for the color change might be is directly related to what compound it is, if you do not know then all speculation is pointless because one possibility may be opposite to another one in terms of chemical processes and explanations. If you do know, you can PM me or another mod and have the thread reopened. If not, this type of speculation (based on nothing but hypothetical scenarios) is against our HR policy.
