(CNN) -- California voters have just rejected Proposition 19, the ballot initiative that would have legalized marijuana under state law. Where did Prop 19 go wrong?
Prop 19 failed in part because many proponents emphasized the wrong arguments for legalization. Many advocates promised major benefits to California's budget because of reduced expenditure on marijuana prohibition and increased revenue from marijuana taxation. Other supporters claimed that Mexican drug violence would fall substantially.

Both claims were overblown. The budgetary benefits, while not insignificant, would have been small compared with California's fiscal mess. Mexican drug violence is mainly associated with the cocaine and methamphetamine trades, as well as from marijuana traffic to other states.

So what is the path to legalizing marijuana in the United States?

First and foremost, advocates must emphasize that in a free society, the burden of proof should be on prohibitionists to justify the interference with liberty that results from outlawing marijuana, a burden the prohibitionists have never met. Any calm assessment of marijuana versus alcohol, for example, shows that alcohol is the substance with the greater potential for harm.

Ancillary benefits of legalization are naturally important: by eliminating the black market, legalization promises reduced crime and corruption, fewer infringements on civil liberties, better quality control for marijuana users, along with budgetary benefits. But these considerations are unlikely to convince the majority until more people agree that government should not interfere in the private decision to consume marijuana.

^^good opinion. I like the emphasis on personal liberty. This part "should" appeal to many libertarians and even their bastard children, the Tea Partiers.

California didnt vote it down, it was just too lazy to vote it up... Some 20million people didnt even voice an opinion.

interestingly, my friend looked at exit poll stats and concluded

white, female, unemployed, uneducated, self-identified as republican, and suburban was the most likely demographic to vote no on 19

I think there is no changing that group's mind lol.

Also, some 7% of voters considered 19 to be the most important issue and voted no on it. He thinks it is growers/mmj industry related people trying to keep it tax free and in their hands. I think it was mostly the same demographic described above.

Also the Asians are at fault (I believe of any racial category the most anti-19). lol damn! We need some Asian celebrity stoners besides that trouser stain harold. LOL I definitely had an opportunity to appear on TV in favor of 19 but choose not to. I dont think I am that famous lol (maybe in one zip code lol)

My psychology teacher jokingly said that the reason Prop. 19 didn't pass was because all of the stoners couldn't be bothered to get up off their couches to go vote.

I did though! IN SPITE OF the marijuana that I regularly smoke, I went and voted. To no avail, as I soon discovered, but -- I tried... :) :|

Was there any discussion during the campaign of what level of taxes would be applied if it was legalised and how they'd be applied? I could see that being a factor for both consumers and producers if it would radically alter the existing financial dynamics.

Imagine if it had gone through then think of all the other states that would hop on board to get the extra $$$ then think again why it didnt pass...We cant have safe legal drugs! Are you all insane!

When I went to go vote yes on it and heard the things why people voted no while they were talking outside made my head spin. "Because Im against drugs", I dont want my child to start smoking". I mean come on cigs and alcohol are in the same category theyre just more accepted in society and anyone's child can get weed anywhere around here they just have to ask like 3 or 4 people so its up to them if they want to start smoking. But anyways this was just to get the idea's foot in the door. I didn't think it would pass also but I was hoping it did but we had the whole country and other parts of the world eyes on us so hopefully in 2012 we'll have more positive support. Also all the major contributions that they got came in too little too late with only like 3 weeks left before Nov. 2nd. Now the Pro-19 activist know what they did wrong and probably make some changes in the bill to make it more appealing to more than 50% of the voters and start advertising on television more earlier and all over the internet. Also only like what 7-8 million people voted? I know there's way more people that can vote in California lol.

I voted, my stoner grower roomate voted no on it because his gf is <21 and he didn't want a $500 ticket for being caught with her if it passed

I think a lot of people are thinking 'if its not broke don't fix it'. While medical marijuana is far from perfect, its good enough for hardcore stoners and pot lovers (and the people who use it as medicine). The feds have been laying off for the most part and IMHO if this passed it would have created a shit storm from nearby states and the feds.

I'm bummed people are so self interested. Like ^dude's roommate voting 'no' cuz his gf isn't 21...yet. And people in the black market looking out for their profits (more understandable, they gotta eat and pay bills).

Mostly I fucking HATE how every fucking hack wanna be comedian makes retarded jokes about stoners being too lazy blah blah blah. Its way way way more complex than the mainstream media is portraying it to be. Just from reading online its easy to see that many "lazy stoners" voted and not all them voted yes. Ahh man I'm too stoned wtf was I talking about?? ;)
