Why Crack Stops Working?

I was enjoying smoking rock tremendously for several months (after someone finally taught me how to hit it correctly to "ring my bell"). It slowly stopped working and for the longest time I thought it was the quality so I searched far and wide looking for better stuff. I finally gave up and just quit. A year later I thought I'd try again and all I can achieve is minimal compared to what it once was. It seems like something in one's brain must change permanently. I was just wondering if anyone here knows the chemistry of why it stops working. Thanks for any input on this.

Cocaine inhibits the reuptake (removal) of dopamine (a pleasurable neurotransmitter) in your brain making more of it available=you feel good. With habitual use there is so much dopamine all the time the parts of your brain which sense the dopamine and tell you to feel good become less sensitive to it. As far as I know it is not a permanent change but it may take a long period of abstinence to get back to how you once felt and it may not be completely possible.

After a year it should work decently well - not as well as it originally did, but fairly close. Have you been using other stimulants during your 1 year break? Stimulants are cross tolerant to some degree.

I would also think carefully about the health effects of doing crack - it is one of the most damaging drugs for your lungs as you inhale tiny, very hot particles which can lead to emphysema (destruction of the tiny air sacs in your lungs) - I know of young people with severe emphysema usually seen in much older long-term heavy smokers caused by smoking crack. If it's not working as well anymore, it sounds like it really isn't worth it...

Look up "Receptor Downregulation" for a good explaination (if what was provided by these fine BLers wasn't good enough) :)

And yea mate, please do watch yerself - Constantly smoking anything isn't good, and as effie pointed out very well, Emphysema is a huge problem for long-term smokers of Crack :\ Nay nice at all.
