Was reading onlne newspaper the other day at news.com.au and found this interesting article in World NEWS...you might be surprised....
article was as follows------->
"Why being a vegetarian is dangerous"
24feb00
VEGETARIANS are more likely to suffer mood swings and serious eating disorders because their diet lacks essential nutrients, a study has found.
A diet low in carbohydrates and protein can affect the body's levels of serotonin, an amino acid that affects mood.
It is responsible for feelings of optimism and well-being.
Low serotonin levels can lead to depression and eating disorders.
A team from England's York University, which investigated vegetarianism in young women, also found many avoided meat as a way of consuming fewer calories – a quarter said their reason for going vegetarian was to lose weight.
Being vegetarian also legitimised eating disorders by extending the range of foods to be avoided, the report said.
People also switched to vegetarianism to improve their health while ethical and religious beliefs were other motivations.
Australian dietitian and nutritionist Rosemary Stanton said vegetarians could boost their carbohydrate levels by eating more vegetables, cereals, pasta and rice.
"Vegetarians can have low serotonin levels – but it is more likely to be from a lack of food than lack of meat," Dr Stanton said.
As a result, parents needed to ensure their children's vegetarianism was not just a smokescreen to lose weight. But not all vegetarians had an eating disorder, she said.
Sam Leary and Kate Hansen turned to vegetarianism because they hated the idea of eating animals. "I know vegetarianism is now a trendy option for young people and many girls may do it just to lose inches off their waistlines, but not every girl is that superficial – it wasn't my motivation," said Ms Leary, 20, of Croydon Park, a media student at Macquarie University.
"I just heard too many stories about how animals suffer before they are killed."
Her friend Kate noticed a difference in her health when she first went off meat.
"A lot of my friends are vegetarian and some of them seem tired a lot," Ms Hansen, 20, an arts student of Box Hill, said.
"It's important to keep your energy up with food like tofu. You need to compensate for the food you are losing."
Dietary recommendations to reduce fat intake, particularly animal fats, at a time when thinness was idealised and obesity stigmatised, made it likely that vegetarianism was increasingly seen as a means of weight control, the report said.
Any comments about it or did anyone else read it?
So what do i think, simple, get some pork on your fork!

im not a vegetarian, but a few of my clubbing friends are... and true to the responses, generally not eating [esp the day after clubbing, when the sight of food is disturbing], will effect the body immensely.

just correcting the article:
serotonin is a neurotransmitter not an amino acid.
the amino acid tryptophan is the nutrient needed by people to PRODUCE serotonin.
Thus any vegatarians worried about tryptophan intake who also enjoy the odd pill, should seriously consider 5-HTP. (5-Hydroxy-tryptophan, which is closer to serotonin than ordinary tryptophan, so u can actually produce serotonin with basically zero tryptophan intake.)
in actual fact EVERY piller should consider this supplement.

READ THE ARTICLE
it says that it is when ppl go veg to lose weight that it is unhealthy, these ppl generally, don't eat vegetarian they just eat what they used to without the meat. Sorry to be pissed off, i must be moody due to my vegatarianismness.
Truth is being vegetarian, that is eating vegetarian food, not salads and bread, is very much more healthy than being a dirty fucken murderer. I'm sure i could find you many many articles which scientifically state this, but as i'm a vegertarian i'm too depressed to care.
Normally when one of my friends gets sick and we're all in close contact, EVERYONE BUT ME gets sick, don't think that it's cause i've got a good immune system or anything, i used to get sick too, until i turned veg. That was about 5 years ago and i think i've been sick once or twice since. Oh and due to my moodiness i'll knock out anyone i see eating meat, which can't be too good for their health.
lol

I posted this article for *INFO* purposes only, not to hear fuckwits whinge that i'm making an example of or taking the piss out of vegetarians.
Is this clear enough to people like Entropope?
We're not murderers because we eat meat, nor are we murderers for ending the life of that poor tomato growing in my vegetable patch.
Plus they are not my words, it's just an article so settle down and get over it okay.

i'm struggling to believe that you put it here hoping for a very two sided discussion. I hear sooo many ppl try to take piss out of the whole vegetarian thing, for a reason i'm yet to understand. I think it's the same reason ppl give homosexuals, and ppl of other races a hard time.
And i won't settle down, i'm far too moody. I haven't settled down for at least 5 years now.

ok to stop this going any further i'll let you in on a secret sleeper. My animated anger and agressiveness is a play on certain bullocksy statements in that article.
Although i think the article is a load of bullocks, i thought it obvious that my emotions were well out of proportion. I mean 'i'll knock out anyone i see eating meat'? c'mon.
I was completely disagreeing with the article and yet displaying the moodiness and lack of seratonin that it was talking about. Don't feel bad, most ppl don't get my sense of humour till they've known me for a few years. I turned 18 before my parents could tell when i'm being serious or sarcastic.
Don't forget the good ol' plur

...thank god we worked that 1 out entropope!.......
