Why be hip? For power, of course. Early adopters of the right thing in the right venue prosper. It's as true now as it ever was. Posters who thought "hipster," with all its accompanying fashion connotations and punchlines, in response to this thread didn't read MDAO's definition very closely:
Of course, in this sense of the term he's almost asking "why be perceptive, fortunate, and motivated?" I like to think I have the potential to be hip, but I'm an incurable generalist. To insert myself in the OP's surfing analogy: I occasionally see the great waves, awe at their possibility, and then dive below to gawk at the fish.having the uncanny ability to tell the difference between new and fringy trends that will become big and influential, and ones that will always be marginal, and to adopt early those former ones before the masses do.
