Why be hip?

Why be hip? For power, of course. Early adopters of the right thing in the right venue prosper. It's as true now as it ever was. Posters who thought "hipster," with all its accompanying fashion connotations and punchlines, in response to this thread didn't read MDAO's definition very closely:
having the uncanny ability to tell the difference between new and fringy trends that will become big and influential, and ones that will always be marginal, and to adopt early those former ones before the masses do.
Of course, in this sense of the term he's almost asking "why be perceptive, fortunate, and motivated?" I like to think I have the potential to be hip, but I'm an incurable generalist. To insert myself in the OP's surfing analogy: I occasionally see the great waves, awe at their possibility, and then dive below to gawk at the fish.

I always tried to stay away from things that were trendy. Fortunately, I have maybe 2 friends, so I have no one to impress. Ever since I lost a few good friends, I only see them as liabilities now.

The trouble comes when something you have liked for a while, becomes trendy.

Typically, I do as well. Mainly because most "trends" are extremely impractical---like skin tight and/or saggy pants, loose shoes with little grip, and $50 dollar T-shirts. However, if I like something and it's practical; I'll wear it regardless.

trying to be hip just for the sake of being hip is actually something that i find to be, paradoxically, an extremely "uncool" trait in people. i think that you should follow your interests in a genuine way, not just latch onto things because they're trendy.

As a kid in high school, seeing this among the majority of my peers is so sad and morbid. The rejection that kids face if they don't conform is horrific.

My generation is fucked up beyond belief.

Shit, I wear fucking skinny jeans, but I just like them. Damn sheep :D

Despite everything we assume, I think that high school kids- and teenagers in general- are the most conservative demographic. Be aware, this shit ceases pretty quickly after high school. I think you are a very interesting and intelligent person, I would like chatting with you; these qualities become much more valued after high school. :) <3

In the meantime, wear skinny jeans ;)

I've always viewed being hip as more of an awareness of what's currently cool/in vogue, being tuned in, not oblivious to pop culture etc. You don't have to like any of it, but the awareness alone is great for making connections with wider audience of people in social situations because it's another avenue of conversation. It's also especially helpful in business and the service industry or even volunteering.

Certainly, It's pretty hard to develop an independent sense of self when the majority of your exposure to the external world is completely dependent on the only framework you've ever known, but that's the problem. Instead of teaching civil disobedience, we direct blind adolescents toward the internalization of social authority. Most will grow out of social norms like style and genres, but ultimately, most people end up a cog in a machine without ever realizing it.

I go to high school so I can go to college, I go to college so I can work a decent paying job, I work a decent paying job so I can support and raise a family, I support and raise a family so they can live an opportune life.

In reality, I go to high school so I can be taught that I need to go to college, I go to college so I can learn how to work a job and feed the academic institution's affluence, I work that job because a minute group of individuals need my labor to maintain power, and I raise a family so they can be exploited for their labor, just like mine.

I wear skinny jeans, but not ridiculously tight skinny jeans that make your crotch uncomfortable every time you try to walk. Haha. All things considered, moderately tight pants are the most practical pants out there, in my opinion.

What bothered me was I always wore Timberland boots thru school. They used to have lifetime warranties so you could send them back and get new ones.
Then all of the sudden, all these damn kids are wearing them in the city and neither working nor hiking in them. It's not even cool to tie the laces WTF!

Now that I'm an adult and couldn't care any less about what I wear, all my clothes come from the thrift shop

Timbs are a dam good boot.
I can go to goodwill and put together an outfit that would probably cost a hundred bucs at a store.
Style doesnt have to cost a buch of money.

Myself, I just like to be comfortable.
It would kill me to wear pants so tight that my manhood's circulation would be cut off.

I used to wear big heavy docs ...Wear all black, in with the hip art scene crowd, but it just.doesn't matter to me anymore...
I shop at thrift stores ... as there are many here, within blocks away.
Sometimes I just throw on whatever falls out of my closet first. :)

Depends on if your going to thrift stores for style or praticality. You can go for praticality and end up being "hip" as a consequence I suppose. In this situation you just wear it I guess (pun somewhat intended).
I used to go to thrift stores for style, but now I would most definetly have to say practicality. Its not that Im cheap or trying to be stylish, like above poster I really just dont care anymore.
Comfort is my main goal. I dont mind paying for quality.
If thats hip, guess Im a hipster
?
I'll never conform man
ps. My favorite outfit is no outfit ;)

But what I'm after is, is there any real practical advantage to be had in pursuing hipness? Does one's quality of life truly stand to improve if one is always there ahead of the crowd.

Perhaps from an entrepreneurial standpoint, innovation is born through been ahead of the curve.. you could potentially capitalize on a niche market spawned out of the latest trends, which goes on to be mainstream. That would definitely improve my quality of life if i could line my pockets with cash from hipsters.

;)

Many hipsters have gentrified the city… I'm indeed not a hipster… lol. My roommate might be though. :)
Thrift stores are pretty much all there are around here… There might be an actual Mall downtown.

The first step in overcoming "hipsterness"
is admitting you're a hipster.
I see folks in denail everyday.
Im a recovering hipster. I never got into the heavy hipster drugs like mainlining the mainstream.
Mainly stayed with the safer forms of hip.
Every once in a while I still have a shot of hip,
but its just enough for me to realize it doesnt affect me like it used to.

the internet killed homogenised subcultures
and so now everything is hip

computers use was once
only for nerds
but now everyone has a computer
and bullies prevail

Hipster are a double edge sword...They have revived my neighborhood but I also see it becoming less diverse and basically its becoming a 'hipster neighborhood" and it is getting a bit gentrified. And ya everything can now become hipster. Some trends are cute and some are soooo embarrassing!!! Like sometimes I get second hand embarrassment for people rocking some really douchey trends.
