Why are hippies disrespected?

Because hippies have a bad image with the media. The media does not support drug use, nor spreading love and hippies are a bit of a counter-culture. Think about it

DISCLAIMER:
Maybe I overthink things if that is even possible?

If you are at all a student of Eastern philosophy, yes, which your question affirms.

^not all "hippies" are dirty

In fact, "hippies" as a group is a very loose term; in its most literal, precise form maybe hippies tend to be more soiled than other groups, but I'd call my mother a hippy and she's cleanly, on time, works hard, doesn't do any drugs, and is all-around a model citizen.

A "hippie" is what history has reduced the ideas, stereotypes and practices of a certain cultural movement of the 60's/70's into. I think many of the more generalized and referenced characteristics of hippies (lazy, music festivals, freeloading) are the negative ones.

What about the ideas that shaped that generation? I know I personally took a few ideas such as respecting the earth and questioning the nature of existing power structures to heart, doesn't make me a hippie.

This generation of trippers is 50 years ahead of that generation, I'm interested in what the people of the present and future will do with the ideals hatched back then...
