Why are drugs hated so much in the U.S?

as titcaca said, license system is the only way to go. it is how the public will be able to accept free drugs. it is also very pragmatic (even if it steps on our freedoms, the drug war steps on them to a much greater degree):

you learn the warning signs of addiction
you learn health related warning signs
you learn health related precautions (EG, bad heart + stims)
you learn the difference between use and abuse, and the useful nuances that lets you avoid harm

with your license, you go to the local RD (recreational drugs) store and buy your D.O.C

that way, anyone trying the drug will either A. have a license or B. get the drug off of a friend who has a license and hence would be an excellent "sitter" for the ride or, at the very least, would be able to give the necessary harm reduction information for the first time user. and if that user wants to continue using, the only convenient way to continue will be to get a license anyway

thus in a licensing system, everyone who uses a drug semi-regularly or regularly will have all the vital information necessary about that drug

this is the system timothy leary proposed in the books he wrote in the 60s. it's what makes sense. tim leary popularized the psychedelics because he believed, as do i, and as happened, widespread use of them would change the way we see the world in a positive way (and we need the change)

I'm going to put it this way. It's not okay to enjoy yourself, but it's okay to kill yourself.

The population of the US does not hate drugs at all. We're the biggest drug consumers in the word! But the US government hates drugs because they interfere with its ability to control the population.

^ if the populace didn't like the war on drugs, it wouldn't be here. you underestimate the power and stupidity of the people

Also, if you really want to know the answer, I recommend you read "Ceremonial Chemistry" by Thomas Szasz.

the American government and many governments live in Fear & don"t think they can Control the segment of society called the "free spirited" who are risk takers, changebringers and therefore naturally flaunt the old fashioned "laws"

they are not sure what would happen if they worked with the free spirited who are often naturally peaceful - after all Peace could prevail & then the usually controlling natured people who "need" jobs like "law" & "government" to act out their repressed needs for "power over others" would only have paper shuffling and emptying bins to do whereas they need to create war & to destroy - so they would be kinda obsolete & maybe Poor!

get it??

Yeah, if you've been watching the History channel, then you know that pot was made illegal because a government brainwashing campaign made it synonymous with blacks and mexicans. And we all know how America feels about blacks and mexicans -especially in those days.

Not to mention, I don't think there is a more pro-Christian nation in the world than the US of A. And that's why I say if the bible had depicted Jesus lighting up a doob, everybody would be lighting up doobs.

It would be mandatory in churches in order to accentuate the experience of enlightenment. Faith healers would be handing it out like candy and taking credit for making everyone feel better. In fact, it wouldn't even be called pot. It would be called "God's only begotten weed."

Plus, I think Americans take pride in identifying with a warrior culture. We look back on WWII and say remarkably stupid things like, "We sure bailed you europeans out that time, didn't we?" In fact, people in the states can't truly call themselves American unless their granddaddy fought in some war or another.

And warriors don't use drugs -period. That is unless we're talking steroids. And pretty much every conservative media personality in the country says that those athletes are being punished way too hard.
woow,i never knew that.always wondered why its illegal...ya learn somethin new every day :D

Good question but it has been asked a hundred times really. because a conspiring rat bastard government brainwashed the majority of the population a long time ago these drugs were bad and unacceptable. One could argue till they are blue in the face the real agendas behind making these drugs illegal and there is more than one credible theory.
Alcohol is a shitty unrefined drug that is the product of decomposition and prediposes people to sleaze and violence imho. It is an interesting choice for "the legal intoxicant", I am sure the reasons behind this would have to do with long standing use by white people and not indigenous tribes lol.

Kind of a 2 part question......

1.Why is it so terrible to smoke some weed, take some ecstasy or maybe even drop an oxy or two if it is our own choice? Sure there are drugs like heroin, meth, pcp etc, but why is it known to be so terrible to take "softer drugs?" Especially when we have the technology to do research and make the already "safe" drugs possibly even safer. Alcohol is much, much easier to overdose on than marijuana but yet it is still legal and marijuana is illegal.

2.Heres another Question while Im at it: If we can make a pill that helps us get a boner, relieve allergies, make us less paranoid, control our adhd, get rid of our headaches, cure our depression, relieve bi-polar disorder symptoms, put us to sleep.......I think you get my point......THAN WHY IN GODS NAME CANT WE MAKE A SAFE FDA APPROVED DRUG THAT CAN GIVE US DESIRED EFFECTS?! Think about it, alcohol has been around for hundreds of years, MDMA was first synthesized in the 1800's, but yet these drugs are still very popular to this day. Same can be said for heroin, meth and pcp.

Basically

Why can't we make our own decisions on our drug use.

Why can''t we make the existing drugs safer and possibly more desirable.

Ive rambled enough but I'd like to hear some thoughts on this :)

Because legalizing drugs and herbs would put the pharmaceutical companies and doctors out of business.

Don't you know...when it's about drugs it's also about greed and money.

THANK YOU SOOOOOOOO MUCH!!!!! YOU TOTALLY ANSWERED MY QUESTION!!!

Smart ass mother fucker..... This might be basic drug discussion but that doesn't mean you need to state the obvious.

did you even look at the links i provided? it was pointing out that legal drugs like tobacco and alcohol are also those 3 things.

A nation of sheep

See how easily Big Pharma got a useful substance like GHB/GBL classed as the "date rape drug?'

Just because that couldn't get a patent on it, and wanted to peddle things like Ambien, that have so many insidious side effects it ist'n funny.

Propaganda, lack of harm reduction and misinformation contributes greatly to the hateful attitude.

because for me drugs wouldn't be fun if i didnt have to hide it...
idk rolling on mdma cause its legal and having my mom and dad know and not care
cause it would be legal kinda takes the fun out of it.
buying the drugs illegalilly is fun by itself and then doing them..
idk its like ditching school.its fun!
im mean think about it we do drugs mostly cause it feels good.
but also to rebel...so why take out the rebeling part...?
life wouldn't have much of a thrill.

I'd say the majority of the population are very misinformed about drugs. One girl at my school said to my friend "I lost so much respect for you after you smoked weed", but she is the kind of dumb corny girl who drinks until she blacks out. Terrible hypocrisy, but it's too popular of a view and I have given up trying to even tell people my opinion, I'll let them be ignorant because they choose to believe DARE.

Were learning about the 60's counterculture in history at the moment and I never realized how against drugs some people are. Not only are they ignorant and uneducated they simply bash them for no reason it seems. Maybe its just cause the people I normally chill with do drugs with me but wow..

What he just said is why the ppl who say more ppl will get addicted are wrong. A bunch of people aren't addicted to drugs they like the edgy life style. People that want to get high always will, making drugs legit will just make more people productive members of society as they wouldn't have to hustle all day to cop. Another perk is sleazy Mexican drug lords wouldn't have nearly as much power, taking the bad guys out of the equation is a huge reason why drug will he legalized. The war on some drugs is a massive failure and to be frank is a human rights violation as it's denying our rights to cognitive liberty.

Unfortunately, it is simply unfeasible to slap a "warning, this could be your last night on earth" sign on something like oxycontin and not expect Americans to look at how tiny the pill is and take three because they weigh twice as much as their co-workers.

The road to legalization is not simple. It is not just a matter of personal freedom; look at how uneducated we are as a nation when it comes to general categories of knowledge. As far as the arguments about the government and media "brainwashing" everyone - I just don't buy it as an excuse anymore. This is a very free country and the masses have freely chosen not to read, not to research, and not to look at things historically. In Europe, they have just as many nice flat-screen televisions as we do and access to just as many "excuses" (even more, if you count some countries' welfare systems), yet the population chooses to learn and ask questions.

We have chosen to accept the status quo, and most of the people on this board who are Americans will probably accept it for the rest of our lives because we'll never really get in trouble like the minorities will. I've been caught doing things, for instance, that would have sent a person of a different color to prison for a long period of time! And they let me go - as if there's some understanding between the cop and I that us white folks will survive this terrible war against poor minorities oops I mean drugs. The funny thing is, that sooner or later they'll come out with a Paxil or Cymbalta that actually makes you feel like the commercials claims it does instead of being placebo non-sense with liver destroying properties, so we'll never really have to worry about anything at all. God bless America!
