who will be the next Shulgin and is it possible with US government laws..

Hi,

I was watching the Shulgin documentary "Dirty Pictures" I noticed many cactus around in the area of Shulgins work. I was wondering if Shulgin is able or was able to create new compounds without having to buy other materials to do so. In other words by creating chemicals from scratch.

Who if anyone is or will be the next Shulgin?. I would imagine there are many more psychedelics that have yet to be discovered and if there is a chemical or chemicals needed to make the not yet discovered compounds and the availability of the needed ingredients.
 
Thats like saying who will be the next Newton or Einstein? People build off of other people's discoveries and insights. There would be no Shulgin without Linus Pauling. There would be no Pauling without Kekule, and so on and so on. As time goes on, and our understanding of chemistry and neurobiology progresses, there will be many specialists up to the task of discovering newer psychoactives or better modifying known ones (like Nichols and his NBOMe compounds, which are not presently under any Analogue laws as far as I know).
 
Shulgin could do what he did legally cuz the research was done legitimately by a liscenced chemist in a liscenced lab and don't forget he worked for the DEA or atleast consulted heavily so obtaining necessary permission/dea codes probly wasn't too difficult
 
There are a few around right now, the mysterious "arylcyclohexamine chemist", and Nichols both spring to mind. Just like there won't ever be another MDMA, there won't be another Shulgin, but there will be plenty who make great discoveries for the world of recreational drug use.

well the DEA were also the ones that stopped him from making any further progress...

On October 27, 1994, the Drug Enforcement Administration, along with other Federal, State and local agency representatives, showed up unannounced, with search warrants, at Sasha and Ann's home in Lafayette, California. The raid followed on the footsteps of a DEA inspection which had been conducted a month earlier. There were approximately thirty persons in the raiding party along with eight vehicles that included a fire engine, a "decontamination unit" and marked police cars. The stunned Shulgins were informed that this was not a criminal action, but rather an "administrative investigation" to determine if Sasha was in regulatory compliance with the stipulations of his DEA license that allows him to be in possession of, and to work with, Schedule I substances.

Administrative and environmental infractions were found; which is not surprising as Sasha's lab (a former basement) is as well known for its pet spiders as for important research and the creation of new molecular structure. It's also fair to say that housekeeping is not one of Sasha's big priorities.

My money is on some random Chinese or Indian chemist, while Shulgin was through and made his work very accessible (and hippy friendly) he really wasn't an astute chemist as far as rationally using SAR and focusing on desired properties. It wouldn't surprise me at all if some Triads or other Asian gang backed research team cranked out the next series of major designer drugs after testing them in slums and basing them off SAR established by other researchers.

Dark and unpleasant I know, but hey its seriously likely. I have a prof that has doodles of random gabapentin/pregabalin analogs in his office for the sole purpose of figuring out what makes them abusable, granted that's also part of his massive quest to design the next big neuropathic pain or bipolar drug.

As for the methoxetamine guy, I actually think I know who he is seeing as there aren't many post doc's missing a left hand in the UK...
 
There's not going to be a 'next' anyone. People work on their own work individually - as Pindar said, sure, people can act as inspirations toward others. But do you really think someone consciously decides to copy someones life and work directly? It's also fairly derogatory just to look at someone and compare what they're like to others, instead of judging them on their individual merit.

I'd have to disagree with the bit about rational SAR. Shulgin didn't know much about receptor structure but he knew what response he was looking for (initially it was molecules with activity similar to mescaline) and he knew how to use his self-testing method along with chemical synthesis knowledge to make new molecules that provided him with very high quality discoveries and results. For his time, I would say he was one of the best SAR chemists.

yeah nichols' line of work is very different. but it was touching to see their friendship in that documentary; nichols was real empathetic to shulgin
