"As a former police chief, I recognize we are not going to arrest our way out of the problem," wrote Gil Kerlikowske, director of the Office of National Drug Control Policy, in a statement released late on Friday. "We also recognize that legalizing marijuana would not provide the answer to any of the health, social, youth education, criminal justice, and community quality of life challenges associated with drug use."

The statement came in response to a petition submitted by retired Baltimore narcotics officer Neill Franklin as part of the White House's "We The People" project, an effort to allow ordinary Americans to gain the attention of policymakers through an online portal at the White House website. Any petition garnering 5,000 signatures within 30 days of submission is guaranteed a response from the White House; Franklin's petition received more than 17,000.

Well i have officially lost all faith in our government. It only required 5000 and was the first to reach that number by far. What the people want does not matter anymore.

From the White House:
According to scientists at the National Institutes of Health -- the world's largest source of drug abuse research -- marijuana use is associated with addiction, respiratory disease, and cognitive impairment. We know from an array of treatment admission information and Federal data that marijuana use is a significant source for voluntary drug treatment admissions and visits to emergency rooms. Studies also reveal that marijuana potency has almost tripled over the past 20 years, raising serious concerns about what this means for public health -– especially among young people who use the drug because research shows their brains continue to develop well into their 20's. Simply put, it is not a benign drug.

Pure bullshit.
It is far, far safer than alcohol or tobacco.
The potency argument is bogus.

I wish that they had had the guts to come out and tell us the truth:
"We get millions of dollars from the tobacco, alcohol, and pharmaceutical industries every election. They have lobbyists in Washington 24/7, and they put constant pressure on us, with threats and promises, to keep cannabis illegal. This, combined with lukewarm support for such measures (around 50% ) and the fact that legalizing cannabis would allow people to portray us as "soft on drugs" in the upcoming election, make us think that politically, the best choice now is to reject the proposal. We have no concern for individual rights or social welfare, but for political reasons we will keep cannabis illegal."

Obama is a spineless coward :p:!:!:p

also: "The people who want marijuana legalized will vote Democrat regardless of what we do with drug policy."

^^^ haha! Nice I seriously doubt It would get enough signatures since all the people that hate on weed are already addicted to that shit. I bet if I spread it around Utah it could get enough votes

I feel sorry for the untold amount of addicts in the U.S. who are being dealt with as criminals and put in jail because of these clearly hypocritical and antiquated ideals concerning drug usage.

A 28th amendment is desperately needed - Protects the right to freedom of cultivation, possession and ingestion of Papaver somniferum, Cannabis sativa and Erythroxylum coca (among others).

I don't know why there are laws telling us what we can and can not put in our body's. If we do something bad when we are on those drugs there are already laws in place that will deal with you then. If you don't have control over your own mind then what do you really have control over? Just because we have more freedoms than anyone else does not mean that we are free. This proves right here that we are not run by a democracy. I don't know what kind of government we have but it isn't one run by the people. It is one that is run by money and corruption

I was pissed when I got the email response. They think the best way of doing things is to reduce use...which is impossible! Stuff like this makes me lose hope but at the same time bs like this causes unrest and unrest inevitably causes change.

Don't feel bad, just write your elected officials and spread awareness on this issue while maintaining mature and rational hopes on the end result of your efforts
