So this has been bothering me for a while, there are two ways of saying MDMA:

#1) 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine
#2) 3,4-methylenedioxy-N-methylamphetamine

Which is more correct? Which do you prefer to use? Most people decide to use option #1, especially the media I've noticed.. Not many people will refer to MDMA as in option #2. Although when talking about MDMA to someone I always tend to say methylenedioxy-N-methylamphetamine rather than methylenedioxymethamphetamine. I put #1 as #1 because that is the more commonly heard name. But is it more correct to say it as in #2?

The latter is unnecessary imo.
People are gonna know what you're talking about without the N.
It's kinda like if someone says "I just tried N, N Dimethyltryptamine for the first time!" We know what you're talking about still if you just say "DMT". Same goes for MDMA. It's when you hear things like MDxx that it starts to get broad.

To tell you the truth I never use the term methylenedioxymethamphetamine in regular conversation. MDMA work just fine. But if I do use the full term online, I don't put the N and I don't really see the point in doing so.

I very rarely use the full name but if I do, I don't include the "n." The full chemical name is obscure enough (to most people) that I rarely use it and when I do, well, damn its been so long I can't remember a good reason when discussing it with friends that I just wouldn't say "MDMA."

Wow I wonder how this would come up in conversation. Even "MDMA" has gotten me strange looks sometimes until I clarified that it was "Ecstasy"

I've only seen it as the #1 option...whenever i say methylenedioxymethamphetamine it seems like the only thing ppl hear is...
"meth?"

Yes, that's what I don't like about it, everyone assumes it's the same thing as meth no matter how much you try to explain, and in a few synth procedures I've seen it's written as #2 rather than #1

Either term will only matter to people who know chemistry. I've only used the first term in conversation, and only with people who would understand the term.

methylenedioxy-N-methylamphetamine shuold be the most proper one, because its the methyl is on the N position or some shit like that.

I always say #1... people are usually astounded that I even know the word "methylenedioxymethamphetamine" the one or two times I've said it out loud. Even most ecstasy users don't know "MDMA", they just know ecstasy as the street names.

i totally agree with you keaton, i mean, if ur talking chemistry with sum1, he should understand if u talk about 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine

Correct in what way? For me the right name (IUPAC correct that is) is: 1-(1,3-benzodioxol-5-yl)-N-methylpropan-2-amine.

The #2 way of saying/writing MDMA is unnecessarily complicated, because the only possibility for a methyl in methamphetamine is on the N-position; the N-position is the only one preceding the alpha-position meaning it can only be methamphetamine if the first methyl is placed on the nitrogen atom. So although#2 is not incorrect, it should not be used because the less complex name is always preferred.
