The original. It was so interesting to do the typical GTA things back then. The new er episodes improved a lot but lost the atmosphere and feel.

Never played GTA II.
GTA III was arguably the greatest video ever made up to that point. It was revolutionary. It's not the best GTA game but you have to respect it's impact.
Vice City is my favorite. It was GTA III except with a great plot and fantastic voice acting.
I could never get into San Andreas. I can't quite put my finger on what I don't like about it. It's just a little overly ambitious. The map is almost too big. Story didn't do much for me.
I just started GTA IV and so far, it seems like a return to form.

its so true about GTA being new in the sense that you could commit acts of terror. the hours of fun i used to get with my friends kiling peoplein the first GTA was ridiculous. but it was very hard to actually play the game as the view was difficult. i think when GTA III came out it revolutionised crime games. it is such a brilliant game, fair enough not as slick and eye catching as SA or IV but what a game!!
 
I always liked all the GTA series, always played them at friends houses etc. Though Grand Theft Auto IV was the only one I actually ended up going out and getting because it's so real.
 
to be honest, i played 1 and 2 way more than i ever played 3 and 4 but technically i dont own a copy of 4 soooo...
 
I liked San Andreas. Granted, I'm not a video game buff at all anymore. I still play a PS2, and have no plans to upgrade anytime soon. Frankly, I lost touch with the whole scene after 16-bit. I picked up San Andreas because of the soundtrack, and it didn't disappoint. There's nothing like carrying out a mission while "Rusty Cage" blares away.

GTASA was pretty dope as well, but the actual game sucked.

Exactly. GTA III for life. It has a certain 'essence' of grimness that was not, and cannot, be replicated by any other GTAs. I see GTA IV as an attempt to return to those principles, but it's simply too big and revolutionary IMO..
 
San Andreas for me. I actually just played it again, I was having fun taking turf and shit. GTA4 is great too. I love the 80s setting in vice city. GTA is the shit.
