Which fiction author writes best on the topic of (struggles with) addiction?

Not sure if this is the correct forum, move the thread if the fit isn't the best.

What the title says basically.
Personally I've never really been a fan of Hunter S. Thompson-esque drug retellings. rather the ones that move me more are along the lines of Stephen King which himself has been an addict.

Currently reading his new Novel Doctor Sleep which is his follow up to The Shining and deals alot with alcoholism the guilt/shame done under addiction and making amends for it. I'm not a downer or anything but I find that sort of tale far more gripping than the simple "get high and partaay" books by any number of dotcom or wall street startups.
 
I think stuff by Raymond Chandler and Ernest Hemingway is exactly what you're looking for :)

edit: wait, I was thinking of Raymond Carver, but Chandler was also a drunkard
 
I should note that I don't necessarily mean alcohol addiction.

Hemingway's characters to me act in ways that I can't related to, they are old-fashioned stalwarts. I'll have to take a look at Carver though.
