Where Rehab Meets Reality

I don't think anyone is saying that money will buy happiness (unless you count drugs), or make you happy in and of itself, but it absolutely makes it much easier to avoid a lot of the pain and stress in life and increases your ability to pursue the things that would make you happy.

Money is insurance against some guaranteed sources of stress and unhappiness.

The only source of stress and unhappiness is your own mind.
What life gives you are conditions. You decide how to respond/react.
If you react with stress and unhappiness, you will call those conditions "bad".
But the problem is what you are creating with your own mind.
If you react with a peaceful feeling and happiness, you will call those conditions "good".
But what is good is simply your own mind.
Some people feel stressed about the same things that relax other people.
There is nothing inherently good or bad in the world.
Everything depends on how you see things.

it absolutely makes it much easier to avoid a lot of the pain and stress in life and increases your ability to pursue the things that would make you happy.

Things will never make you happy.
You can't avoid stress with money.
Happiness, and stress, come from your own mind.
They are created entirely by your own mind.

I'm enjoying watching this show. I think I'm watching series 6, where they are treating addicts who are not celebrities. It's really interesting seeing how they all come down off their drugs of choice and how they relate to the others in the group and the dr's and their families. It makes me kind of sad in some parts and there are some funny parts too, but a few of the people on it I can really relate to even though they are from the US (mostly 2 of the guys who seem pretty cool and down to earth to me) and are addicts from drugs I have never even tried (heroin and pain pills).

it is pretty hard to come away believing that happiness depends on money.

No, happiness does not depend on money, however, having money means you are able to live life in a capitalist society with basic needs being met, such as food, shelter and health.

There is nothing inherently good or bad in the world.

I would argue that some things are inherently good or bad, two examples accordingly are charity and rape. Nobody would argue that legitimately helping others was a bad thing, I think you see my point.

I do see what you are saying and I agree with most of it. But, nothing is black and white nor easy in this world. Having money is not the key to happiness, but in most western societies, having a certain amount of money (say, above the poverty line) is required in order to serve what I would call the basic human requirements for happiness.

I would like to add that I've been lucky enough in my life to have what most would consider large amounts of money due to some successes in my younger years. These days I am much less monetarily rich, but I think I have a richer life in other areas. Like most people without a lot of money though, some times lacking cash can be stressful. But I still consider myself happier now living "paycheck to paycheck" than when I was earning a lot more than I could spend.
