Where do pharmaceutical companies get their opium?

what do you mean?

i dont think pharm companies put out pure opium, they did and i believe it was called Laudnum.

dont quote me on this but im pretty sure all pharm companies synthetically created their opioids in a lab

Like do they buy it from the same suppliers who supply the black market or do they grow it indoors or something
 
synthetically produced in labs.

i dont believe any company pulling in as much profit as they do would have anything to do with the black market.

i also dont believe there are massive fields of poppies hidden somewhere in the us.
 
Interesting question... I would be willing to bet they are all made in labs synthetically... but codeine and morphine are not synthetic compounds they are in opium, codone and morphone aren't...Some one please come enlighten us!
 
I'm not completely sure I'm right but i thought they were growing poppies to then use in the lab. Here is the link to where they produced a new variety of poppies to make mainly codeine.

I believed that they used opium to then make all the other opiates(or opoids... i forget the difference). Or maybe its just like he said above. They're just using the poppies for codeine and morphine.

do you think the pharm companies have a contracts with other countries in poppy production?

wierd. i just cant imagine there being poppy fields in the U.S.

Exactly, they get them from poppies. They mass produce it using different bases and chemicals in order to extract whatever alkaloid they need. Oxycodone comes from thebaine and codeine. They extract the alkaloids and use whatever recipe to create the semi-synthetic opiate.
 
I used to buy 20kg potato bags of "Glaxo Smithkline" poppy seeds - when I was in NZ.

They did not have a "made in" stamp.
 
most Poppies that are produced for use as pharmecuticals in the US come from turkey and india. in the US there is a policy that states 80percent of opium poppies or opium whichever that is used in the US comes from those two countires while 20 percent can come from elsewhere. it has been discussed alot recently that the US should include Afghanistan into that 80 percent or maybe just purchase all 100% from those three countires but for some reason this hasnt happened...

by the way i am not sure how this policy affects other poppies that are high thebaine producing poppies for oxy, maybe they fall under this policy as well and are grown in those countries but i really dunno bout that, i know the oriental poppies tend to have a higher thebaine content, or so i have heard
 
I had actually read a paper that said most of the morphine and codeine that American pharm cos get comes from AU... Where a great deal of the poppies are grown and cultivated on large farms controlled by the govt... A google search could have answered this faster possibly?

a friend of mine was talking with me about opium the other week. it turns out her great grandfather and grandfather were in the opium business contracted to Bayer.

Armenian family, and Armenia borders turkey. So i would assume that general region.
 
i bet they just skip the labor of extracting the Opium,
i bet they just process the whole pod and get pounds of morphine codeine thebaine and papavarine from tons of plant material
 
Some of the opium grown in South East Asia is used by pharmaceutical companies as well, if I remember correctly.

Despite a lot of opiates/oids being synthetic or semi-synthetic, pharmaceutical companies still need raw opium. Semi-synthetic opioids start with a natural opioids, and fully natural opioids like morphine and codeine can not be synthesized at all.
