Opioids When to thin Poppies

I have a few patches of papaver giganthemum growing outside, i sprinkled a MASSIVE amount of seeds out there, and now the plants are literally overgrowing like grass out there. How much do i thin them out? Only leave a few per square inch, or what? Anyone with any expierience, please feel free to PM me. Im going to get pictures up ASAP.

I grew some some poppies in my backyard a few years ago but didn't bother thinning them out, i figured the more the merrier lol and ended up with a decent haul. I asked a friend who was in to gardening about spacing and she says it's best to thin when they get around 5 inches tall and leave 6 to 10 inches between plants. The next spring i thinned them out about half a foot between plants and it really made a big difference in there size, ended up with pods almost twice as big as my first batch.

You should have thought of this before throwing seeds everywhere. Where are you located?

There are a number of books and guides out there that will teach you how to grow poppies. But let me first ask, these are opium poppies (Papaver somniferum/giganthemum ) yea?

If so you should reread BLUA. (If not, like if they're California's state flower, the CA poppy (non-opium producing; legal herb), I guess you might be able to ask that question...).

We are not here to help you grow drugs/engage in illegal activity

But, I could always be wrong... I do like growing poppies, after all, but I was under the impression we didn't like to encourage questions related to drug cultivation.

I realize now this gray area does seem like something BL would be against as it is illegal to grow opium poppies for purposes of drug extraction.

HOWEVER, I do believe it is "legal" to grow the poppies for decoration, in california at least, but the OP did not mention his intentions with the flowers.

Yes, is technically is legal to grow poppies for decoration, but even then, the line between poppies used for decoration and drug extraction is very thin and pliable. If you have poppies, the Federal government can, if they would like (rare unless you're a large scale, obviously illicit operation), come in destroy your crop and/or arrest you, regardless of their purpose.

But then again!

Legal questions aren't for BL anymore either!!!

Here's a picture of a functional poppy farm in Afghanistan. This is the most effective way that I've seen to grow. This picture was taken when in bloom, right before the flowers fall off and the pod scrapping begins.

Glad you guys like the pics, I spent a couple months over there and got to learn every step from seed to 20kg bags of pure opium. But yeah, I suppose the thread is getting derailed. I just wanted to show the OP what he was asking about in terms of density in planting.

I see it breaking rule 1 of the BLUA though:
