When do you become a addict? Where do YOU draw the line?

I think an addict is someone who needs a drug to feel "normal"

Interesting question

I agree with your definition - but dont you think any number of drugs can be used by a person in an addictive manner? eg pharmaceuticals? DX

I tend to agree with W.Burroughs on the correct definition of addiction:

The state of being in a person who 1) compulsively seeks and uses a substance regardless of personal, social or economic consequences/cannot stop consuming said substance regardless of efforts to do so

and

2) a change in physiology from consuming said substance over time has changed the biochemistry of the individual; making said substance a metabolic necessity (you need to continue to use the substance to maintain normal body functions).

In this regard the only substances I would call 'Addictive' are opioids and nicotine.

activities and substances are labeled addictive; from chocolate, sex, gambling, Cocaine, Amphetamine, etc. All of which can develop into uncontrollable compulsive behaviors- but there is no metabolic need that develops from too much sex, gambling, coke, speed, etc. This goes for hypnotics and sedatives as well. Rebound symptoms develop when chronic use is stopped; but it still isn't 'withdrawal' in the way opioids or nicotine induce withdrawal syndrome.

Rhinorider this aint the first one of your threads that i have closed. Please dude. For gods sake use the search engine. Ima merge this but next time ima lock your shit down if you cant UTFSE lol. ;) (use the fuckin search engine incase u aint familiar with that acronym)

Substance use becomes a problem if the substance harms ANY part of ones life and the negative consequence is ignored and use continues at the same or increasing rate.

W/D from barbituates and alcohol can be fatal, while withdrawl from nicotine and opiates is, at worst, extremely unpleasant.

Alcohol, Benzodiazepines and Barbiturates + the rest of the hypnotics and sedatives do not produce a metabolic necessity.

The delerium tremens/seizures/etc are a severe rebound effect from discontinuing use after chronic long term use of one of these substances. No different than severe congestion after chronic anti-Histamine use, or fatigue and lethargy from cessation of chronic Cocaine or Amphetamine use.

Rebound effects from cessation of use is not the same as a withdrawal syndrome.

Opioids and Nicotine are the only substances (that I know of) that produce a metabolic need.

Popular misuse of the words 'addiction' and 'withdrawal' is what leads to people calling every compulsive activity or substance 'addictive' or every rebound effect 'withdrawal'.

Yes you can be addicted to weed.

It becomes so much of a lifestyle and what your known for that the thought of going without it just makes life seem so dull and pointless. Yes, people definitely crave it psychologically but also helps some get to sleep or relax physically.

Your an addict when...

-When you find yourself steadily using more despite telling yourself your going to cut down.
-When you steal anything from a friend/loved one.
-When you frequently find yourself thinking about it when your not using it.
-When you get strangely over excited at the anticipation of getting really high off the substance.

People are different, some people are vastly more prone to addiction than others.

Its hard to believe that some people cant even get addicted to tobbacco while others struggle with weed addiction their whole lives...

I think you're a drug user when you enjoy doing them from time to time, but you still enjoy doing lots of other things without drugs. You're a drug abuser when it starts interfering with your life and causes your lots of mental and physical grief. You're an addict when your entire life revolves around drugs and it becomes more important to you than anything else.

when i am selling my posessions, i know it's time to get help.
and when i'm willing to put myself in very risky situations to get drugs (where i will most likely be sexually assaulted and either don't care or think it's worth it) i REALLY need to get help.

I agree, I know Im an addict when I can not function w/o the drug, I wake up thinking about it, I dream about it, and I put myself in bad situations to get it. I spend all I have on it and don't care about food, bills, etc. Thats when I know I am bad.

Are you in the wrong thread? Nobody said shit about bein addicted to weed. Its like youre replying to somebody that aint there and didnt say nothing to you. And go shoot dope for a year and then tell me bout weed being addictive. The shit with weed is all in your head. Opiates are physically necessary for your body to function when you are addicted to them. 99% of the people who talk about weed bein sooo addictive never been addicted to any truly addictive more powerful substance so its all they know and all they got to go on making them think its worse than it is. Like a kid who is grounded saying that their life sucks cuz they cant do nothing and cant leave the house, complaining to a guy whose locked up in jail. I actually LOL'ed IRL when i read "Some people struggle with weed addiction their whole lives" you sound like a public service announcement or somethin. Im sorry. I aint tryin to be a dick to you or call you out, but you got to realize that shit just sounds ridiculous.

Anyways, some ppl in here seem to be confused thinking that there is one true definition of addict...No this thread is just meant to ask wat YOU personally, think is the line for when YOU personally are addicted. hope that clears it up a lil. otherwise we could argue all day. thas why its only meant to be asking each person subjectively.

When you become blind to the everyday beauty in your life because the only vision you have is that next hit

I knew I had to draw the line WHEN....

The anxiety would get so heavy in my chest just thinking about NOT doing it.
The only reason I was going out was for that drug and without it I had ZERO interest of partaking in anything.
Having a few beers led to "beers suck I just want some blow"
I kept a huge stash of benzos just so I could come back down to normal and sleep.

I'd be so terrified of sleep because the only thing I could think about is everything I was throwing away

Wrong. I'm sure as shit an addict, but I can still enjoy a pretty sunset or one of those chicago snowstorms with those fucking huge flakes coming down slow as all hell. I can't tell you how many times a day I'll think to myself 'shit, life's pretty grand aint it?' and I'll be on the bus or something just lookin out the window.

So I'm clearly addicted and can still see something other than the next hit. I think you're talking more what rock bottom is.

My problem is that I have to cop once daily. Heroin lasts me about 20 to 24 hours of wellness. Or maybe 18 hours of wellness, two of sniffles, and then we start getting into sickness territory. But it's long enough that I can get by doing it once a day, preferably late at night. The rest of the day I don't really think about it, other than 'man, this is a fucking drag' in the fucking snow and all whatnot. So you can be an addict without it taking up every thought in your head, easy.

Daamn I feel fucked now. I got to boot up 3-4 times a day and i thought that was normal for most ppl who bang dope.....lucky u. i wish i could get by on once a day.

When the thought to use outweighs all others and starts to effect your life. Also, withdrawal.

TF you're possibly quite a rare breed.
I am not a heroin user, but meth addict for many years.
Even now, detoxing, it consumes my every rational thought and visits me in my dreams every night.
