When a girl wears dreadlocks...

my name is TopRocka, and I should know what an inappropriate post is, given how long I've been around on BL.

dreadlocks are a natural and eventual state of every kind of hair that is untreated whether you are black, white, red, or yellow.

Cavemen actually started it,

and i think that sayin "yo" is offensive to blacks if your white..

no, what i wanted to say is that this thread made me think about how strange human hair are, due to the fact that they just keep on growing and growing and they just never stop growing, you can end up with meters of hair if you care to...
??
i mean animals usually have a fur with a certain respective size
and like the hair on my arm or legs, they stay at a certain size
so as mammals we mostly are "naked", but when it come to hair we have got this will never stop growing genes or something,,
i just think its strange

If the dreads were done well and are well maintained I really like em on a girl. Btw, it's a bunch of bullshit that being knotted up automatically means you smell. :p When I had my dreads in they were washed very regularly.

I should find my high school pic with me all dreaded up and post it for the lulz.

That's true. I have straight, fine blonde hair, but even that started dreading while I was travelling around Australia and living rough.

Your follicles will eventually switch off and enter a rest period. Some old hair falls out and new hairs grow. So it will not grow indefinitely, there is a max length it will eventually hit that varies with age, amongst other factors. Dreadlocks will keep growing because the hair is all matted up in knots. So as hair falls out and follicles switch off, you are still retaining the hair instead of brushing it away or having it just naturally shed.

It means she is allies with the Predator.

LMFAO!

I have a friend who has dreads, and I would probably put her in that "new-age hippie" category. She is in school to be a massage therapist, always talks about feeling the energy of other people in the room, does yoga and psychedelics.

She is also really pretty, sexy as hell and can definitely pull them off.

whats wrong with allying with the predator?

dreads are HOT!

simply from an aesthetic standpoint, i love the way a beatiful girl looks if shes dreaded her hair properly. its just really, really sexy IMO.

When a girl wears dreadlocks... here's hoping she can pull it off with grace and confidence, especially when it's job interview time.

Oh, and I find it fucking ludicrous that one race or one religion can copyright a look for their exclusive use. There's a limited number of things a person can do with their hair and clothing, so naturally different people are going to adopt the same look for different motivations. Both Skinheads and Tibetan monks shave their heads. But it means something different to both, and neither can claim that the other has no right to do it.

Dreads are just what happens to human hair when it's neglected entirely, and allowed to go completely natural. I can see this symbolizing lots of different things, depending on who you are and where you come from.

I would hope that anyone here who sports dreadlocks has some well-founded personal reason for doing so (even if that's just to look good), and as a result won't have any trouble responding in kind to anyone who misunderstands their motivation and gives them crap. As I said, if you can pull off the look with confidence, by all means do it.

In the Hindu religion people start growing dreads when they give up vanity and personal hygiene the throw dirt on them selves and let their hair go to shit. I’m not sure about Rasta stuff that probably has to do with afros.
To me when I see a girl with dreads it makes me think she doesn’t practice personal hygiene. I have been around a lot of hippies before and dreads kind of creep me out because alot of hippies that live on the road don’t take showers and let there hair go to dreads half the time they get full of bugs that lay eggs colonize and spread everywhere.
A lot of people I’m sure wash their dreads but to me it is just a symbol of no personal hygiene. A lot of women who have dreads also don’t shave or shower.

To me it is just unsanitary I don’t care if they have dreads but I am careful how close I get to hippies with dreads because a lot of times they are full of bugs and that is not just some ignorant statement I have been around hippies and seen them have to shave their heads to get rid of them.

The old saying if a girl can’t brush and wash her hair she probably doesn’t keep other places clean.

I’m sure it’s for fashion and clean a lot of time but being around road hippies make me very cautious of dreads.

Having seen Glitterbizkit's dreadlocks IRL I can confirm they look awesome, especially the silver thingies in them (sorry not up on my technical terms), regardless of what culture or religion they originally derived from.

Danke!! =D
As for this soap rejection subculture nonsense, I can confirm that's untrue. I shower regularly... Once every six months, at the very least.

You may know this already, how dreads are specifically Jamaican and are, in origin, inseparable from Rastafari culture and faith - Ras Tafari being a name of Ethiopian Emperor Haile Selassie I. Selassie also held the title “Lion of Judah” - thus, as I understand it, to wear dreads is to identify with, and in a sense be, a lion.

One could argue that anyone not Rastafari who sports dreadlocks is committing an act of cultural appropriation. Especially when worn as a aggressive “mainstream political” statement - for instance, the more radical groups of New Zealand Maori who adopted dreads, but not Rastafari, during my stay there in the 80s. (Incidentally, there were many “whites” in New Zealand who identified themselves as Maori and wore dreads, if their hair could be so treated without it looking more stupid than leonine.) Bob Marley the Conciliator (or at least so his modern deifiers would claim) would have likely spoken against such a use of dreads.

His comment to a white person with dreads likely would not have reflected a sense of being offended, but, rather, the thought “That is not I”, meaning that it’s not an accurate reflection of the white person’s sacred individuality. (Rastas use “I” where more conventional English uses “you”.)

There’s a lot to be said for this. To wear, carry or act out something in ignorance of your own heritage, or in flattery or emulation of another’s, is to diminish your own self, your own history. Wouldn’t it be far better if we could each embrace our own histories, fix the problems they have, and move forward?
You must be getting a higher quality of conversation with your hairdresser.

I would just like to point out that Bob Marley most likely would not have been offended by a white person sporting dreads because he comes from both a black and white parent.

Dread are awesome.. on a chick its hot.. funny cause glitter bizkit is the only black (half? sorry hope I don't offended you, I just assumed from your pics), girl I've seen have dreads, seen plenty of girls and guys with dreads on phish and sci tour, just all white from what I recall, just ironic some ppeople seem to think dreads are only for black rasta's, Lenny Kravitz and Glitterbizkit are the only non-whites I've seen with dreads.. Most of the white people I've seen with dreads didn't really come off as trustafarians either.. Bob Marley wannabes? eh kinda but most have seemed sincere despite all their Irie-I talk bussiness LOL.. BTW Glitterbizkit I'd totally hook-up a free dread bead or two made off glass.. their like a 5 min thing that takes next to no glass.. I've been put off of going to jam bands after phish broke up so I rarely see any dreadies anymore, would like the chance to throw down on some dread beads, their basicly a section from a pipe, just unfinished with both ends left open..

peice-out
