It probably means they're into dreadlocks.
Why don't you go up to them and say, "Wow, I really love your hair!" and get to know them, rather than assuming hairstyles have a concrete set of connotations that extend to all people regardless of location or local culture?
Talking to people and getting to know them beats stereotyping any day of the week.

Thats the truth, as long as it was done intentionally. I don't know about that meaning they are all into new-age stuff though (which would totally negate the hotness). There is probably more of a tendency to have some sort of counter-culture thing going on, but thats by no means certain and I wouldn't make those sorts of assumptions about people.

i agree.
a hairstyle really doesnt say that much about a person. although i will admit every person (guys and girls) that ive met with dreads was a part of the counter culture.
... that might have something to do with ME though, because i certainly am involved in counter culture. makes sense that my friends would be too, right?
also, i dont think it negates hotness. its purely aesthetic. ifi see a girl walk into a room with dreads and know nothing about her, it is definitely a turn-on (assuming shes pretty and all...)

I have dreads and I don't belong to any particular subculture. I have found that sometimes people (mostly people with dreads) tend to be a bit elitist about them, like you're not supposed to have them unless there's a 'deeper meaning' to them. My reasons for having them are purely aesthetic and practical, it's just a hairstyle after all! A very sexy hairstyle! :D (Not blowing my own horn here, just find myself more attracted to guys with dreads... as long as they look clean and nice)
It prolly means she dont know much about the history behind em . GB I think your dreads are nice. But they are a religious symbol and they DO have a deeper meaning to them. for a non believer to wear dreads its considered very bad luck. they symbolize a deeper relationship with Jah and aint for just anybody to wear in the rasta culture.
In general, I dont really like how dreads look on chicks, or on guys unless it got a religious meaning. Other than you GB

IDK, to me , styles of clothin g and fashion can be pretty annoying when they start as meaning sometin and then its just a "look" instead of a meaning.

I think stereotyping to an extent is valid. They do exist for a reason. If I see a VW bug with a Grateful Dead sticker on it I don't make a concrete assumption that he is a peace loving hippy but at the same time I wouldn't be shocked to find out that he smokes a bowl or two after work.
