This is kind of verging on Drug Culture material. I can see how there is some HR value in the discussion though, so it's cool if we keep it here in BDD.
Be very careful about consuming substances you're not familiar with prior to going to an airport or getting on a plane. What could be a silly joke on terra firma can have you labeled a terrorist on an airplane. The use of Benzodiazepines is common, even today for preflight anxiety. Like all Benzodiazepines, they are probably way too common in fact.
Airports and airlines throw Alcohol at you like crazy. There is a culture of consuming Alcohol both before and while on-plane. Someone with a little Alprazolam (Xanax) or even some Pregabalin (Lyrica) in their system who has too many drinks can easily end up being a serious problem. It's just not worth the problems, so I would highly advise being familiar with this stuff beforehand.
Opium is a very poor choice dude. It is an extremely pungent and (depending on where you are in the world) easily identifiable fragrance. A dog is gonna be able to sniff you out easily. If you're going to be using drugs that are not prescribed to you, then I would highly suggest using processed pharmaceuticals as opposed to any kind of illicitly-bought substances, especially plant-based preparations like Cannabis Flower, Opium Latex. This also applies to Heroin and Morphine base, as they are often not distilled to completion and will thus smell of the Opium from which they were originally made, not to mention the vinegary smell specific to Heroin.
I would consider looking into muscle relaxants or may antispasmodics also. Carisoprodol (Soma) comes to mind. You might not necessarily need to anesthetize yourself for the flight. Perhaps if you can get comfortable, this won't be an issue. I know a truck driver through BL who began using more and more potent Opiates to treat Sciatica and related pain so he could continue work. It turns out a combination of muscle relaxants and NSAIDS (and yoga) were enough to render the Opiates not needed.
