Whats with the aggression?

"I'm not a racist but..."
Granted Aussie, your experiences with aboriginals may be the result of the fact that we don't [anymore] have a well estbalished aboriginal community in melbourne but the rest of your comments seeem unforgiveable. I'm not saying this justifies intolerance just that peoples experiences are shaped by those who they meet. Although this forum is more geared towards free speech, perhaps you should consider the feelings of others before you generalise.

Most of the people I have encountered from Perth are usually racist, backward, yokel types. The ones who aren't like this are mates who have migrated from Perth and they bag the shit out of the joint. In fact I heard Perth is becoming a migration centrepoint for disenfranchised white afrikanas since apartheid ended in South Africa. Hahaha! :)
So should my conclusion be that all people in Perth are racists? Yes, all people from Perth are racist and I am a Perthist.
...and now..
famous Perth cliques:
1. I'm not a racist but..
2. Some of my best friends are aboriginal..
3. I'm half Italian therefore...
4. I've encountered many different races and cultures... (ie. Kalgoorlie, Boonie Doon)
So how does it feel to be picked on as country, inbred, half-brained oaths? Please see the humour in my post and try to get the message (if you can read that is, cause I know that it is hard for the state government to fund real schools there).
-F, in sarcasm mode..well mostly.

^Hmmm.
Now I cant speak for Melbourne but having travelled over to Sydney last week for 4 days due to a wedding I noticed something startling...For that entire 4 days the only aboriginal that I did see was an artist at Sydney's gallery that was demonstrating the painting technique he used on one of his works.
This is in stark contrast to Perth where going into the city any day of the week will near surely guarantee getting hassled or verbally abused.
Four days is no where near enough time to judge any city but what I noted was that it seemed to be quite an obvious explanation as to why everyone over in Sydney seems to be both so tolerant and so quick to condemn...it must be infinitely easier to be tolerant of a people that you never see or hear.
The reason Perth people seem so racist is due to the fact that if you are not on your guard then there is every chance that you will end up getting glassed or beaten on a Saturday night out in Northbridge (Perth clubbing area).
Its classical behaviorism (read Pavlov, Thorndike or Skinner).
Pavlov’s famous experiment involved a subject (a dog) being presented with a stimulus (some meat) that is paired with another stimulus (a bell). Whenever the bell was rung the dog would salivate, knowing that it would get meat. Eventually the meat was taken away and the dog would salivate whenever it saw the bell, regardless of getting meat or not.
Classical conditioning utilizes an innate response. Learners are passive, as the emission of the response is not controlled consciously.
To tie this in with the issue discussed here is rather simple...eventually the subject (person) will associate an Aboriginal with pain, injury and trouble. Even when the direct pain and injury are removed the association will still be strong enough to influence decisions on a sub-conscious level.
Also to surprise some of you i did talk with the Aborigine artist for quite some time about his works of art and painting history. Respect has to go both ways. This guy was a pleasant, honest chap who was friendly and taught me about the Aboriginal section of the gallery. He was civil and cheerful and so was I.
That's where the key misunderstanding seems to be. If I'm expected to be friendly and civil to someone who calls me a "fucking whitey" and spits at me then hey - call me human - but its just not happening.
For all those who still think that Perth people don't have a clue, please, come over and check out the clubbing scene in Northbridge one Saturday night. Go up and chat to a few "friendly" aborigines in the city. Discuss some issues. Have a laugh and a beer together.
Still - it might be wise to get some health insurance...
(oh boy am I going to get flamed...)
