happy gilmore.

i hadnt seen this in forever and at my daughters suggestion rewatched it together and found it to be good fun. i somehow had mistaken it with billy madison, and cringed; but throughly enjoyed the trip down memory lane. it wasnt half as goofy nor cliched as billy madison and was a wholesome feel good late night film.

The Wackness

It was pretty good & then the file ended too soon. So now I have to make up the last 30 minutes or so with my imagination.

También la lluvia

I thought it was very good, the ending seemed a bit abrupt, but it stirred quite a lot of emotion and the comparison between modern-day and original Spanish colonialism in South America was very well done.

Pacific Rim.

It's one of those movies you don't know you've been waiting your entire life to see, until you see it. Goddamn.

PB and I randomly decided to go see it some monday night at 10pm. We came out of it shellshocked. I have definitely been waiting my whole life to see that movie. And I want to shove it in everyone's faces! MILLENNIALS SAVE THE FUCKING WORLD. shut up, dicks! We weren't promised fucking flying cars and holograms, we were promised a burning crumbling cyberpunk dystopia! And we're getting it! And saving your ungrateful "millennials are the laziest, worthless generation" asses! I'm supposed to go see it again this weekend.

and lord, it's made me feel warm and fuzzy feelings about american political enemies! like those russians! great!

i definitely squealed as soon as idris elba came out in that little jaeger suit thing. he can put his hand on my knee any time he wants. oh and has a house in atlanta. so this will definitely happen.

:)

Already seen it twice, and will probably catch it at least once more in the cheap theater when it gets there.

Come on, Belisarius. Would it have killed you to quote the person's name along with the actual quote? I have no idea who you quoted, nor what movie you two are discussing.

The Door in the Floor

elle gets a fair amount of screen time. she's really young. still adorable. just old enough to not be a blob.

one of the themes turned out to be something i am interested in. the obsession with the photographs makes the movie. they remind me of mann's Immediate Family.

"Ode on a Grecian Urn" is better. this movie is just stamped out. not an elegant rephrasing. it being from a writer's perspective and about artists does not make it feel self-reflective, just easier.

haha yeah true. I went back 3 pages and couldn't find it.

Here you go -- two posts above it, in regard to Pacific Rim:

When in doubt, or too high to pay attention to detail, putting a section of the post in quotes followed by site:bluelight.ru usually reliably does the work for you.

Thanks, psoodOnym. I wasn't high, for sure. I'm just too lazy for all that noise. It makes no sense to quote someone and completely cut their name out of said quote.

Ginger & Rosa

been in anticipation of this one. even meant to catch it in theater. for some reason i was really surprised that elle isn’t rosa.

a huge disappointment. i wasn't looking for Pulp Fiction, just something soft and simple that'd give me my elle fix. the story is nothing. not even teenage girl would find the depiction of friendship and its trials interesting. shrinking jeans and hitchhiking. “please don’t fuck my dad.” their connection is feels blank. a weak hack at American Beauty or Ghost World.

the missile crisis and protest are awkward tools to develop elle’s character as an intellectual. going for the surreal feel of David Boring or the lesser example Life During War Time; it doesn’t work. and her parents’ activist friends--her supporters--are annoying.

yeah, jeans. earth tone turtlenecks. no twirling in ice blue. i don’t think she wears a dress the whole movie. she’s 13 or 14, but her character is 16 or 17. the role mostly involves her watching things happen, so we get lots of shots of her perfect little face. framed in the brightest red hair, which i could have made peace with if it wasn’t for everything else. far short of the ethereal, sofia-esque shots of detached stars.

last night i just shrugged. today i am all bummed out. i was banking on a pleasant presentation of elle. would have made this week easier.

A Little Help

i really like the way pam drinks a budweiser. that actress is good at the stressed role. movie kind of reminds me of The Good Girl, though i haven't seen that in a while. anyway, i'm stressed and i found the movie to be average and relatable. does a good job of addressing the "simpler said then done" applies to the "make it happen" attitude.

Spring Breakers - Four friends go to extreme lengths to have an awesome Spring Break.

Shitty pop music, garish lighting, gratuitous sexuality, disorienting editing, mostly unlikable characters, and blatant moralizing make this movie....pretty fucking cool. Spring Breakers is basically a disturbing commentary on modern youth culture - it portrays Spring Break like a modern Gomorrah, the streets filled with sex and drugs and music. This movie is like a Super Double Extra Fudgy Monster Brownie Chocolate Sundae with extra whipped cream - so rich and sugary that, while delicious, it kinda makes you want to puke, but in a good way. "Excess" is the only real word for it, but it's a controlled excess - though the level of sensory stimulation is ridiculous, Harmony Korine always feels in control. He knew exactly the kind of film he wanted to make and, for the most part, he did it perfectly.

The four main characters have a surprising amount of depth that is slowly revealed as their behavior becomes more and more reckless. James Franco's character is a little confusing, most of the time bordering on silly and ridiculous, but at least he gave a good performance, which is more than I can say for Gucci Mane's character (who sounds like a stroke victim). At first I was kinda skeptical about Korine's use of former Disney stars (and his own sister[who shows the most skin out of the 4]) as his main characters, but I guess it's pretty unsurprising that they all play drunken party sluts really convincingly.

The music is both terrible, and perfect. Shitty pop, dance, and rap songs abound. But really, the movie would have suffered immensely without them.

I really like this film. After being let down by Only God Forgives, Spring Breakers felt very refreshing.

I watched it today, because of this review. It was good, but not great. As indulgent as my fried chicken and potato salad (southern style, of course) from Publix. I was really surprised by the end. It was impressive.

The Wolverine.

As much as I love the X-Men, I've always been lukewarm on Wolverine as a solo character. With that in mind, this is a solid effort, and talkier than you'd expect. As a direct sequel to the very mediocre X-Men: Last Stand, I can say it's better, but it's no X-2; I think I liked the Easter egg more than the whole preceding movie. The only thing I nitpicked on a bit is that Wolverine comes off as a foreign clod in this movie, while in the comics and cartoons I've always gotten the impression that he's much more Japanese-saavy. Whatevs.

Three out of five.
