Riki-Oh: The Story of Ricky.

What can I say? Absolutely hilarious. Loved every minute of it; from the rubbish dubbing, the ridiculous gore, the ludicrous characters! Brilliant stuff. An action film that doesn't take itself too seriously. Just what I needed.

I've been watching a lot of movies, I just don't post much.

Seen a few in the last couple of days. Toy Story 3 (2010) was the best of them. Glad I finally saw it, just a fun film to watch. The Hurricane (1999) with Denzel as Rubin Carter was good, except ever since I've watched it I've had that Bob Dylan song stuck in my head. The Kids Are All Right (2010) was better than I thought it was going to be, but I was disappointed with the ending and I felt like it left off on an unfinished note. I've seen it get praised, but I found Synecdoche, New York (2008 ) to be rather depressing, boring, and just too weird for me. I spent most of the movie waiting for it to get better and it didn't. I liked other films Kaufman has worked on, but I couldn't get into this one.

Buried.. Really enjoyed it.

Gomorrah.. Italies city of God... Imo its better. Very good direction. A must see for anyone who likes gangster films.

Ajami.. Like crash but in the Arab ghetto a gangster film as well another must see

Midnight in Paris (2011)



This was admittedly my first Woody Allen movie and I loved it. I only knew of the movie because it was nominated for best picture in 2012, but I didn't know anything about the storyline and hadn't seen any previews beforehand. Great mixture of realism and fantasy, some comedy and romance. Was really surprised by this movie and am glad I ended up watching it.

very good thriller. small scope for soderbergh, but nice and effective. 4/5

- When a Woman Ascends the Stairs (Sad, a bit melodramatic, enjoyable)
- Life of Oharu (Depressing, beautiful, Mizoguchi)
- Scandal (All-around fantastic, underappreciated Kurosawa film)
- Argo (Meh, blah, *shrug*)
- The Seventh Seal (Beautiful, philosophical, interesting)

Of the ones listed: The Seventh Seal, Life of Oharu, and Scandal were my favorite.

Word. It got talked up a bit on here, but I was really disappointed. It was pretty cliched and lacking in originality. There were a number of details that were inaccurate, which bugged me since it was supposedly an accurate portrayal.

Also, I'm not sure if they fucked up on the editing or what, but when in jail (before he got the pills) the guy went from WDing in one scene, to being fine in another, to being sick again in a following scene. Withdrawals do come in waves, but once you're sick it's not like you're going to be suddenly unsick for a few hours, unless you used something.

It was basically a bad version of The Town combined with a bad version of Requiem for a Dream.

I'll have to check those out. I rented Deconstructing Harry from the library, but haven't watched it yet, perhaps after work tonight.



Last movie I did watch was Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows. It was enjoyable. The first one they did in 2009 was a bit better, but they were both fun films.

Madadayo - This film explores the various episodes of an aging Professor's life and how his life's work has left an impression on his students and those around him.

Madadayo is Akira Kurosawa's final film - often regarded as his "Swan Song". On one hand, the film is clearly about Kurosawa and his legacy as an artist and director - on the other, it's a boring pile of shit. The thing that I hated about Madadayo, moreso than the lazy cinematography/acting/dialogue, is the fact that it violates the ONE commandment of dramatic film - there is absolutely no conflict whatsoever. Instead, it's over two hours of people kissing this old professor's ass. His former students help him move three different times, search for his lost cat, and throw him parties - that's it. That's the entire film. Nothing happens, nothing is resolved...there's no real conclusion to the film because there's nothing to conclude. Kurosawa's sentimentality permeates every single frame of this film, and as much as I respect the man's work, it borders on masturbatory.

I really, really hated Madadayo. It is, without a doubt, the low point of Kurosawa's career.

yeah. i noticed that as well. when his brother found out he was back on pills(while in jail) he was so fucked he could hardly keep his eyes open then five minutes later he looks like hes wd so bad hes about ready to suck the c.os. dick when the c.o. lays out a line on his desk and offers him a proposition. i guess im just a stickler for detail and good acting...

I watched it because the same director did 'the yellow sea', which i saw a couple nights ago and consider a masterpiece

it is about a pimp who has to investigate what is happening to his 'girls' who keep disappearing.

i loved how the protagonist's face looks like on film, another classic south korean film, just hope there are more for me to find eventually...

Jason bateman is a brilliant actor...i have an odd sense of humor and most "comedys" dont do it for me, but this movie had me in stitches .

Twas better than I thought it would be. As many times as I see him in other stuff, to me Jason Bateman will always be Michael Bluth.

I usually like Mike Judges work. It fades off in the second half, but his movie Idiocracy was pretty decent.

Since you say you're a Korean film fan, I assume you're familiar with the films of Jee-Woon Kim (I Saw the Devil, A Tale of Two Sisters, A Bittersweet Life, etc) and Chan-Wook Park (Vengeance Trilogy, Oldboy, Thirst, etc), but if not, you would probably love their entire filmographies. Also check out the films of Joon-Ho Bong, Ki-Duk Kim, and Chang-Dong Lee if you're interested in the comedic/dramatic side of Korean cinema. Joon-Ho Bong's 'Mother' and 'Barking Dogs Never Bite' are probably still on Netflix, but you'd probably need to pirate films from the other two directors I mentioned.

cause you all are talking about it. plus King of the Hill and mila. it wasn't the right movie for tonight. i've been feeling shitty today and the plot just brought me down. that beauty in the bleak thing would have been great, but it was too plastic to work. didn't do it for as a typical comedy either. only time i laughed was when they figure out why there's a busy signal, though i laughed pretty hard.
