Mandy... two hours of glorious insanity. I give it 5 stars out of 6.8, but the stars are bees and there are wolves after me.

1917... Decent war movie. Relies too much on its gimmick (shot as if two continuous scenes) but it's difficult to make a WWI movie anything but slow. 7/10.

Thanks for the heads up. I'm not that familiar with 'Parasite' outside of knowing the director. My wife & I enjoyed 'Snowpiercer' considerably. I don't think she has much interest in 'Parasite' though. I'm surprised she enjoyed Snowpiercer TBH. She doesn't really do movies in general outside of maybe some Sci-Fi stuff she likes but I digress. I also have Okja on my watch list but haven't gotten to it. Actually now that I think on it; IIRC he also did 'Mother'? If so I also have that on my watch list. 😆

I enjoy a good amount of non-English content. I'm a big Park Chan-wook fan. The 'Vengeance' trilogy is one of the few possessions I don't plan on tossing / donating when I move. Those & my Takashi Miike films. Some good memories & nostalgia associated with them. 😁

As for the last movie I watched; I was in the mood for something relatively mindless last night. I watched 'Den of Thieves'. As for the film it was decent. It fit the relatively mindless bill quite nicely; at least. =D ;)

I tried watching Mother and had a hard time. I haven't seen Snowpiercer but I was super turned off by the trailer and subsequent reviews I read. From what I can tell, Parasite is a step above anything else he's made.

Yes, definitely. Parasite is his best film. Memories of Murder is really good. Snowpiercer is good, but not great.

I liked Mother, though I can understand how it'd be difficult getting into without being in that particular mood (perhaps not the correct word, but it's in the ballpark).

The Host is wonderfully entertaining.

Snowpiercer was vey good beyond expectation's.

If you now the comic it was based upon they did a great job on translating it to a movie.

The director has a taste for bizarre scenario's obviously.

Thanks for all the input! (y) I watched 'The Host' many years ago. It was only recently with the publicity of some of his films that I realized it was one of his films. As I mentioned my wife & I enjoyed 'Snowpiercer'. I'm not familiar with 'Memories of Murder' I'll have to add that one to my list. :)

As for 'Parasite' I watched it last night. I enjoyed it. It was worth the time I spent to watch it. I will have to decide between 'Okja' & 'Mother' for my next film of his. Though they appear to be quite different in terms of subject matter / "genre". Though I'm not really big on "genre" labels. According to Hulu 'Parasite' like the film 'Good Time Max' that I mentioned are both comedies. I guess if a movie has any funny scenes in it; it becomes a comedy? 8)

In general I'm not easily disturbed so I would assume I'd be fine with 'Mother" in terms of subject matter. Though that's probably evident by the fact that I'm a Takashi Miike fan. ;)

I'll have to see what mood strikes me & report back after I watch another one of his films. Seeing as the three of his films that I have watched I've enjoyed I'll take the time to watch the rest. I generally watch a movie when I wind down my day & eat dinner & I don't think I have anything else on my watch list outside of some anime that's leaping out at me as something I need to watch right off. So it's quite likely I'll continue with watching his movies. Thanks again for the input. :)

I just re-watched "Pay it Forward" (2000). I think it's a sweet and kind of sad movie that highlights the hurt we do to one another, but also the inherent kindness that we can all tap into if we try. It's an interesting take on altruism and although a bit cheesy at times, I actually really enjoyed it and it tugs on the heart-strings. I think this is one of Haley Joel Osment's strongest films (I also liked him in A.I). I like the idea of conquering one's own demons and also accepting others' demons as an act of kindness. I like the idea of a chain of kindness. Anyhow, 7/10, not bad at all.

I was gonna was Parasite because it sounded like a cool horror movie about (well, parasites...like body horror)...but no.

Onward (2020)

Pixar flick about two elven brothers who set out on a quest to use magic (long abandoned in society) to bring their dad back for one day only. He passed when the younger was born, and the older brother only has a few memories of him. Decent flick, a few good laughs, a few moments that make the more emotional viewers cry (and the rest of us laugh at them). Not great, not bad. Just a hair under normal Pixar standards but still worth the watch. 7/10.

Lean on Me (1989)

Based on a true story, Morgan Freeman plays a teacher from the 60's transferred out of his school for tying to teach the kids rather than process them thru. Skip ahead 20y and the Mayor brings him back to be principal and bring order to the school such that the students will learn. More specifically, if less than 75% of the students can pass the Basic Skills Test, the state will take over. Last year, only 38% pass. 'Crazy Joe' Clark (Freeman) returns to a high school riddled with drug dealing, fighting, and utter chaos overall. He is drastic with his changes, often upsetting those he must rely upon...and periodically, those folks in turn help HIM learn a thing or two. Overall, it's a feel good film, but it shows it's age. 6/10.

I watched "Wristcutters: A Love Story" (2006) yesterday. It's a quirky film with elements of life and death, metaphysics, romance, appreciation for the little things and questions about purpose and the things we seek in life. It's kind of a dark comedy and I think it does a good job, though I did kind of predict the ending. I'm also not entirely sure about the pacing as it does get a little bit slow at times, but maybe that adds to the sense of journey. I think it falls into the same vein as films like Beetlejuice or perhaps Donnie Darko (one of my all time favorite films) to a degree. I liked it though and think it's the kind of movie that would be good for a date night, because ultimately, it is a sweet and enjoyable film. I'm thinking 6.8/10.

I dunno why, but I felt like watching some druggy movies, so I watched two tweaker films back to back.

The first I watched was "The Salton Sea" (2002). Somehow it was way more cringy than I remember it being. Particularly the bits of dialogue when Val Kilmer is playing the trumpet or when there are flashbacks to him and his wife. I dunno, for some reason it felt kind of contrived and was trying to be some kind of Gonzo-druggy thing like Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, but sans any real substance. It was heavy handed with the villains in the story too. Meh, somehow I enjoyed it a lot more when I was 17 and I saw it the first time. The acting was sub-par too 4/10

The second film I watched was "Spun" (2002). I guess 2002 was the year of the tweaker film! This was better than "The Salton Sea" and did not take itself too seriously with way more of an absurdist and kind of surreal take on things. I also think '02 Brittany Murphy was smoking hot in in kind of a trailer-park way. I enjoyed the occasional trippy little animation cut-scenes and it kinda of captured the feeling of being "Spun" quite well I think. There were some moments that genuinely made me laugh out loud. I don't think it's any kind of amazing piece of film, but it was alright I suppose. Not really worth going out of your way to see. 5.5/10

I just watched "A Prayer Before Dawn" (2018 ) and it's one of those rare occasions when I can say what a fantastic piece of film! It's based on a true story and follows the redemption of a British boxer that is messed up on Yaba ("crazy drug" in Thai - a mix of methamphetamine/caffeine) and is put into the Thai prison system. Having personally been held in a Laotian prison for a week (no charges), I can attest to the accuracy of the SEA prison portrayed. The beatings, the abuse, the corruption, the drugs... it's all real, I saw it. This movie is top notch and though light on the dialogue in English, it is well worth the watch. The film is not over-acted and the set (shot on location in a very real prison),the characters, the acting, the low-key and dark haunting cinematography... Might be the best film I've seen this year 9/10

Recently checked out "Flower" (2017), it's on Hulu. Really just read the summary and turned it on.

Was pretty awesome for what it was. Basically this 17yo girl and her lil clique using some wiley methods to con pedos in their town. Like the first scene they rip off a dweeb cop for hundreds. Shamed the pig delightfully.

Ends up going into the main story about getting revenge on a teacher that assaulted her new stepbro. Just an easy going, revenge film that explores a lot of taboo subjects. For whatever reason, I seem to recognize these coming of age types of movies immediately and I always love them. Give it a 7.5/10, something I'd scope again for sure.

I watched the Millennium Trilogy (Girl with a Dragon Tattoo) recently and greatly enjoyed it. Swedish with English subtitles. The first movie was better than the latter two, but that tends to always be the case with trilogies. Much darker than the following two though.

Worth a watch, I'd give the first film an 8/10, the latter two a 7/10, overall as a trilogy, 7.5/10. It's on Amazon Prime right now IIRC.

I watched "The Fall" (2006) and thought it was an interesting approach to film and brave in it's direction, with that said, I don't think it quite hit it's mark. It has kind of a disjointed and fractured narrative with cross-overs between the real and the mythical. It flits between these two worlds (with obvious parallels between the two) and in the end, you end up with a distinct lack of character development. Ultimately, I didn't care enough about the two main characters (a depressed stuntman and a little girl in a hospital) to be all that invested. The settings for the mythical side of things were impressive and really quite masterful (I would have loved to have been the one scouting those locations). It's a bit of a shame, because I actually really like the idea of weaving these two narratives together, that of the mundane and then that of the fantastical, tying them together through metaphor or even quite literally; of how we are authors of our own story in a sense. Ultimately, a little too much style over substance and not enough cohesion for it to be excellent. Would I rewatch it? No, probably not. Do I think it's kind of an interesting watch as film study of sorts? Yes. I think a 7/10 is appropriate.

I watched "Brightburn" (2019) and it was nothing to write home about really. It was a simple idea that was decently executed I suppose, a little too heavy on the jump-scares and a little too stingy with regards to originality. It's a simple premise and this will be a short review as a result, this is basically all you need to know: Creepy-evil-child-superman. There, I just saved you an hour and a half. 3.7/10.
