Film What's the Last Film You Saw? v. Tell Us What You Thought!

Lynch is another one who I think is kind of a mixed bag (the same classification I recently gave to David Cronenberg)...he's done some movies I've liked a lot, like Mulholland Dr. and Blue Velvet...others I thought were kinda crappy, like Lost Highway...and then there are other ones like Wild At Heart where I'm not sure what the hell he was going for, lol

I'm definitely a fan of some of his stuff though. His films use sound very effectively IMO

"Jojo Rabbit". I wasn't really sure what to expect from this one. I like Taika Waitiddi (sorry if I butchered the spelling on his name) movies, especially "What We Do In The Shadows", but given the massive changes in subject matter, I just had to watch it and find out. It was less funny than some of his other works, but still definitely had its moments. It looked like "Moonrise Kingdom" with nazis from the promos, but it was much better than that, though still fairly reminiscent of a Wes Anderson movie. I liked this mo ie as much as anything I've seen recently. I can't do it justice by trying to describe it, so just give it a go. It's one of those movies that you will either love or hate, but worth watching. 4/5.

I have that in my list to watch but I have no fucking idea what it's about? I just liked the trailer.

Upgrade. 4.5/5

Been wanting to see this one since it came out, finally saw it on netflix and damn was it good. The action parts were body horror and camera work was so good during those. YES!

Ok, watched it today. Sucky part for me is...I'd already seen a good part of the back half 1-2y ago while I was flipping thru things. So, a bit of deja vu. I'll also admit a bit of flashback to Hardcore Harry with some of it. However, it was good for what it set out to be. No real well known actors, but the lead does indeed pull off a great performance as he struggled with his 'inner voice'. Great action and camera work in the fight scenes. Plot is something you kinda feel coming, but can ride along with not knowing for sure. I very much like the ending...don't know if I saw it thru to the end last time, but it was good!

Thanks for the review (you, too, @schizopath ). Upgrade has been on my list to watch since last year but haven't gotten around to it yet. Is it a horror or no?

Annie Hall.

I must confess that the first time I watched it years ago I didn't like it very much. Yesterday I watched it again (without much hope) and, to my surprise, I really like it. I don't know if I'm older or more sensitive. I loved the ending and egg story.
I love Annie Hall, definitely Woody Allen's most inspired work. It's like half his films are amazing and the other half are just boring or utter garbage.

I don't know if the guy is a workaholic or just wants to break a record but I think he has practically directed one movie per year for about 40 years.
I don't think I've watched half of Allen's filmography, but so far I haven't come across one that I consider utter gargabe. I think my favorite ones are: Match Point, Crimes and Misdemeanors, Annie Hall, Play It Again Sam and Midnight in Paris. What others do you recommend?

Back when IMDb still had message boards, "Singapore Sling" (1990) was pretty legendary on the Horror board. It's a unique mix of horror, art film, and porno, LOL...with weird dramatic, psychosexual themes thrown in...honestly it's a one of a kind film, IMO. I always recommend it in threads about "off the beaten path" films, it made a big impression on me. You'll never look at kiwis the same way again!

Synapse films put out a decent DVD release of it a while back

I love Singapore Sling! It's like a crazy arthouse porno/horror film, with surprisingly good acting, the woman who played "the Daughter" especially

Been working my way thru this one and just finished. The phrase forming in my head repeatedly is "This is funny. F'd UP! But funny." Made in 1990, it looks and feels more like a 70's psycho-sex romp filmed in B&W. A very odd watch, given the women are the only two with dialogue - daughter in English and mother speaking French and then translating herself for us (WHY??!?!), but they both turn and talk to the audience directly at times, breaking the fourth wall. The guy has dialogue, but it's all narration and/or his thoughts, in Greek (subtitles required). I can see only a very tiny portion of the population being willing to watch, much less enjoy it. I'm in that group. I think.

I enjoyed Love and Death and Cafe Society a lot. Can't say I've seen most of his films either, haven't seen half of those you listed. Midnight in Paris is my second favorite though, after Annie Hall. Also really enjoyed To Rome With Love. The Jade Scorpion and Blue Jasmine were both very 'meh' in my book.

Oh yeah, The Purple Rose of Cairo was a good one. Classic Woody Allen style.

It would often get compared to "Thundercrack!" (1975), which is similar in certain ways but more conventionally "pornographic", I guess, and (from what little I remember of it) less skillfully executed than "Singapore Sling". But yeah, that was another one that would satirize/subvert certain noir and/or gothic themes in a way that was rather memorable.
