"Good Boys". I had high hopes for it, but it was basically a kids movie with molly and dildos. I'm glad I didn't waste the money to see it in theaters. 2.5/5...

I watched the love action Lion King. It was fantastic, made me feel very nostalgic.

There Will Be Blood (2007)

Wow... what an intriguing film. I'm not quite sure how to describe the plot; essentially, an ambitious oilman takes over a town, buying up all their land for his enterprise, and clashes with a young evangelical pastor who wants him to respect his church/God. Slow moving, thought provoking... bloody to say the least. The ending was just perfect for the film. Daniel Day Lewis did an amazing job in his role and won an Oscar for it.

Definitely worth a watch but definitely not a feel good movie in the slightest. Same director as Boogie Nights, Paul Thomas Anderson, if that gives you an idea.

8/10

I really like that scene near the end, where his son asks him for his blessing to leave and start his own business, and it turns into a big blowout, with him yelling "BASTARD IN A BASKET" after him as he walks away...that was a powerful scene I thought. Also the scene at the VERY end, when...well, I won't spoil it for anyone who hasn't seen it, but the ending is glorious

There are other good things about the film too...the memorable depictions of the dirty, labor-intensive work involved in extractive industry during that time period...the subplot involving the uneasy alliance between the forces of religion and the forces of capitalism...Daniel Day Lewis, who put in a phenomenal performance in that movie...just the overall depiction of Gilded Age/Progressive Era USA...etc.

Really like that one.

Annihilation (2019)

Went in without expectations, thoroughly enjoyed a visual experience that made me wish I was tripping. Visually aesthetic, with an interesting take on a common 'alien' theme. Mostly, I really enjoyed the visual ride as they progressed deeper into the shimmer and came to terms with what they encountered. I wasn't looking for a deep film, but I can see where some try to interpret this as such. Though, to me, it was just a cool ride. It's not for everyone, but I suppose a lot hinges on what expectations you carry into it. For me, I had none, and wasn't disappointed.

Since you say you're a Korean film fan, I assume you're familiar with the films of Jee-Woon Kim (I Saw the Devil, A Tale of Two Sisters, A Bittersweet Life, etc) and Chan-Wook Park (Vengeance Trilogy, Oldboy, Thirst, etc), but if not, you would probably love their entire filmographies. Also check out the films of Joon-Ho Bong, Ki-Duk Kim, and Chang-Dong Lee if you're interested in the comedic/dramatic side of Korean cinema. Joon-Ho Bong's 'Mother' and 'Barking Dogs Never Bite' are probably still on Netflix, but you'd probably need to pirate films from the other two directors I mentioned.

^ South Korea has had some great entries in the thriller genre over the past couple decades..."Memories of Murder" (2003), "The Chaser" (2008) and "I Saw The Devil" (2010) were a few of my favorites...I haven't seen "Parasite" but, judging from the previews, it looks like something I'd probably like.

"I Saw The Devil", in particular, that one was excellent I thought lol. I wasn't prepared for how over-the-top it was, Choi Min-sik (of "Oldboy") was great as the film's demented villain. I'm sure that there have been some other more-recent entries that are good too, but I haven't been keeping up with whats been coming out recently

On these, and other recommendations, I prepared myself to watch Oldboy and was stymied by a lack of subtitles. Whilst I sorted that issue, I began watching:

I Saw the Devil (2010)

Premise is a serial killer is loose, catches a woman and kills her. However, her fiance is a special agent who takes two weeks off to mourn...during which he tracks down the killer and begins a series of catch-and-release torture on the guy. Gore factor runs about 6.5/10, we have seen a lot more blood from Korea, but it's not the central part of the film. Instead, the focus is on our hero (?) becoming a revenge driven monster, and the path our victim(?) follows in trying to escape and then counter. There are some intentionally funny parts, such as a cannibal trying to free his hand and failing or when our killer on the run gets picked up by a taxi that already has a rider...and the driver explains how lucky the killer-hitchhiker is getting a ride with how crazy everything is. That taxi scene is good for camera work and blood, but gives a solid laugh when our killer finds what's in the trunk. There isn't much torture porn...there's minor torture, more like executions primarily, and porn of a few (large) Korean boobs shown, but not much nudity - again, it isn't the point. We wrap up with a good climax of the killer trying to escape his hunter and turn himself into the police, only to face off with the hunter one more time at the very end. Not suspense, or even shallow twists, nor nekkids or great gore. Just a good film for what it aimed at being. 8/10

Last night the gf and I watched Fools Gold with Matthew McConaughey and Kate Hudson. Its what you'd expect it to be.

Upgrade. 4.5/5

Been wanting to see this one since it came out, finally saw it on netflix and damn was it good. The action parts were body horror and camera work was so good during those. YES!

lmao @TLB....was going to ask you to name the film you're upgrading your review of. Damn, I need more coffee.

Doom 3/5

Now this is one of my guilty pleasures, overall 2nd favorite game movie after the original Resident Evil which also came in 2004. Even as this movie is devoid of anything intelligent or clever tricks or even a script, I really like the ending fight between the now "demon" Sarge and "superhuman" Reaper.... This movie needed more demon killing in the first hour and half.

"Jojo Rabbit". I wasn't really sure what to expect from this one. I like Taika Waitiddi (sorry if I butchered the spelling on his name) movies, especially "What We Do In The Shadows", but given the massive changes in subject matter, I just had to watch it and find out. It was less funny than some of his other works, but still definitely had its moments. It looked like "Moonrise Kingdom" with nazis from the promos, but it was much better than that, though still fairly reminiscent of a Wes Anderson movie. I liked this mo ie as much as anything I've seen recently. I can't do it justice by trying to describe it, so just give it a go. It's one of those movies that you will either love or hate, but worth watching. 4/5.

I'm watching 2017 twin peaks i already seen it. but i finished the first 2 seasons, figured I understand it more, such a weird series
