like a lot of good horror movies, it was fun to in a group but would have been boring by myself. nice color grading. like it's filmed on color positive film. it's not.
the cinematographer says they tested 35mm but preferred the look of digital -- right.
there were some continuity errors. how did they stuff the hides of the two elderly to burn them at the end if they'd already burned them over that grate and put their ashes with the special tree?
on the figurative level, the whole thing is her psychedelic trip. we see the little girl starring down the giant bear in the painting above her bead at the beginning. during, she deals with how to live with the death of her family and move on from her shitty boyfriend. facing her demons. on the literal level, people get killed.
"be afraid of the light" is a fun flipping of a trope.
