Anyone else see Welcome to Me? I went in expecting a light comedy and was surprised to find it delivered a lot more than I bargained for. It's unusual to see a movie about mental illness that does not either present it as hopelessly tragic, comical, romantic (mental illness=shamanism/wisdom) or simply an intolerable pain in the ass. This movie showed it to include but not be limited to all of the above.

Yeah, I liked it. I would have preferred if it wasn't an SNL actor playing the lead, though. The acting was a bit over the top.

As for Kristen (or is it Kirsten) Stewart...
Yeah, she's pretty. But isn't cinema full of pretty women?
She can't act for shit, IMO. And she thinks she's awesome.
There's nothing special about her, aside from vanity.

Ex Machina

Largely predictable science-fiction flick, with beautiful cinematography. Has a lot going for it and a lot detracting from it, IMO. Some great dialogue and some awful plot contrivances / exposition. A bit too slow for my liking. A lot of screen time is devoted to cinematography. Some people will say that it is atmospheric. And, maybe it is. But, there's less than 2 hours of screen time and I would have preferred less "atmosphere" and more dialogue. It seriously lacks subtly. The characters are, all, polar opposites. Not a great film (although, it had the potential to be one). Certainly a good film, though.

It Follows

A superbly executed modern horror that is let down a bit by questionable casting and some sub-par acting.

The cinematography is beautiful. Not in the same way that a lot of modern high-budget films boast, though. The camera work isn't just highly polished. It is, often, unique and effective (while never departing too much from genre expectations).

It Follows cleverly breathes new life into old horror concepts. It is a seriously disturbing film.
The idea behind it falls apart a bit, upon dissection. But that's unavoidable.
I didn't overthink it conceptually, and really liked it.
One of the best horror films I've seen in years.

I'm sick of trying to work out numeric ratings for films.
Whether or not I think this "deserves" 4 "stars" out of 5, or 3.5, or 4.5...
It's stupid. I couldn't be fucked doing it anymore.

flawless film imo. i was on the edge of my proverbial seat for every second of the film.
set and setting were lush and very aesthetically beautiful, acting was all very good, i loved the philosophical concepts which it stimulated in the later part of the film. its very rare when i catch myself saying to myself out loud while watching a film "oh my fking god, oh my fking god.."
the score and sound design couldn't have been done better
the only thing i regret is not watching it at the cinema with some loved one.
amazing that its this writers directing debut ..

it left me feeling somewhat reminiscent, in a sense, of when i watched 'the usual suspects' for the first time, in terms of amazement/excitement/astonishment.

an excellent documentary that gave alot of insight into "tiny living" and its movement against financial debt for the sake of security. i loved it.

I've never seen it other than a few minutes here and there, but there's a show called "Tiny House Nation". The few parts I have seen show how much is possible with just small spaces when you have things fold up and rooms convert into other rooms.


Edit: That last sentence was a pretty lame explanation
 
Jurassic World

Lame plot. I'm not sure what this is due to, but a few things caught my eye and irked me. There were moments of improbability where, wow what a lucky coincidence, there is a car with a key to escape, perfectly placed and timed. Whoa, one of the main characters shows up out of nowhere almost on cue at precisely the right moment! I thought how highly unlikely and hard to believe these moments were until I realized I'm watching a movie about fucking pet dinosaurs. So it was whatever after putting it in context that way. The product placement did annoy me though.

Saw it in IMAX 3D so at least the visuals were worthwhile.
 
Hot Girls Wanted

i saw people who post in The Lounge saying it's disturbing, and given the topic i thought it could be really out there. it's sad, but not very hard hitting. it does answer the question of how there are so many videos of pretty girls doing things way more fucked up than necessary for money; they don't know any better. not a movie-worthy answer. the only impactful scene is that duke student's porn clip juxtaposed with her tv interview.

A sad movie is a documentary called "Very Young Girls"

It's about how young girls are brought into the world of prostitution. I've mentioned it on here before. Two guys actually filmed themselves picking up young girls and pimping them out. They were hoping to sell the footage to HBO or some network and maybe get a TV show. Instead they got arrested and some of their film makes it into this documentary.

Saw this last night, also in IMAX 3D, which was somewhat redeeming. I'm not sure if it's just my line of thinking but there seemed to be quite a bit of anti-corporatist undertones going on throughout the film. Even though I did notice the "lets use product placement by pretending to criticize product placement" shtick. The movie itself wasn't very good. I keep trying to compare it to the original, which no Jurassic Park sequel/prequel will ever live up to. That turkey was roasted as soon as the original film hit the theaters.
 
^ tend to agree.

i think that anybody who's expecting any more from this than a big-budget cgi romp with dinosaurs eating people is expecting too much :)
