whats the healthiest food IYO?

apples, BLAND?!!?!?!? JUICY, FULL OF TASTE... ah you suckers must be buying the shitty apples, there's nothin like the crunch of a shiny half-pound of raw kilojoules. that's usually all i have for breakfast and it keeps me full till lunch so there's something in it that's got me going that's fsho

bee pollen is supposed to be able to sustain human life on its own

hemp is also incredibly good supplying all essential amino acids

super fruits of all sorts, but they get enough press

yerba mate is also very good, you could almost live on it alone, gauchos call it their liquid vegetable

really though the secret to health and enjoyment for that matter is variety!

You can live off of mostly hemp easily. It's a source of all your essential amino acids, has a perfect fatty acid ratio for optimal health, and if you eat a little bit of fruit and leafy greens for their vitamins, you'd be set for life.

about the bee pollen, that'd be a damn risky venture I'd imagine :\

you could not live on yerba mate, it's a drink, similar to a coffee, that you drink from a gourd, not something you can live on at all.

what differentiates a "super" fruit from the rest?

I'll definitely agree with variety =D

Ya i wouldn't recommend living on bee pollen, but it does supply all the nutrients a human needs from what iv read

when talkin about mate i said almost, meaning no you could not live on that alone, however it does have a lot to it, lots of vitamins, minerals, some protein and a very high antioxident capacity. just because it is a hot drink with some xanthines in it does not mean it has similar nutritional value to coffee

I guess what differentiates a 'superfruit' from the rest is an unusually high level of phytonutrients, unique nutritional qualities to other fruits and a decent advertising campaign

Not a food.... but a supplement I know of, and not to sound like a salesman, is MonaVie. It has 18 fruits in it and a shot of 2 oz in the morning and 2 oz at night gives you 13 servings of fruits and vegetables. It's main ingredient is the Acai berry which is the number one superfruit in the world and the ONLY fruit to be considered a food because it contains protein, though small amounts. It's pretty amazing actually, was found to cause a self destruct response in 86% of leukimia (SP?) cells by researchers in Florida. That MonaVie shit is the only stuff along with water and Gatorade I rock when I'm binging on cocaine. Keeps me ALIVE!

worrddd acai (ah sa hee) berry is the top superfruit
and over all one of the best things you could possibly
ingest.

A certified nutritional consultant I know told me that Kombucha Tea is an elixir. He said that it is the most perfect substance you can take into your body. I don't know how he quantifies that but I definitely feel better after drinking it.

ya kombucha is great stuff. i dont know if id call it perfect or whatever but it is a very good probiotic with some good nutritional value. Im about to start brewing my own, its easy and once you start you have an endless supply as long as you keep up with it.

remember if you buy premade kombucha always buy it RAW or else it is worthless. Also do not drink other peoples home made kombucha unless you are sure it was brewed in a sterile environment as contamination can be dangerous and brewing it basically involves creating a perfect environment for fungi and bacteria, but ya only want the good stuffs ya see?

also it is slightly mood elevating so no matter what one will feel good drinking it (small amounts of alcohol, caffeine, b vitamins and a few other goodies)

a quick google search will tell ya what its all about but be forewarned it has alot of attention in some health nut circles and so some claims should be taken with a grain of salt.

id be glad to answer any questions the best i can about it also

acai is 'so good' because of a huge antioxident capacity, lots of those phytonutrients, high nutritional value in general (as well as containing protein which is almost unheard of in fruits), and because its super!8) (how did ya know bingalpaws?)

Alot of fruits are considered superfruits, but the fact that their not exotic or maybe too common, ppl dont talk them up.

can you quantify the purported surplus in phytos and antioxidant capacity that acai has against the average fruit? I'll call it super w/o being sarcastic if you can do so convincingly =D

well i dont know what the average fruit is, lets not compare apples to oranges here, but i can say there is such a thing as an ORAC value (Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity). you can check out how its measured and whatnot with a quick googlin. but the ORAC value for freeze dried acai powder is 610, a carrot about 50, a cherry about 100, a blueberry about 260.

phytonutrients are a bit harder to compare as it isnt easy to find exact measurement and its a broad term for a lot of things (varying potency and effects) but it is quite easy to see that there has been scientific inquiry resulting in finding acai to have high concentrations of phytos.

honestly though i see no reason to say superfruit without sarcasm, its a ridiculous pop word that means ill pay more for novelty and good marketing. however some of the fruits in this 'category' are in fact incredibly good for you
also note i was trying (probably ineffectively) to be sarcastic about 'superfruit' the whole time...

your last paragraph, hammer/nail/head ;)

I can't wait til we know more about phytos, free radicals/antioxidants, and all of that, but as far as I can tell, at this point in time, it's mostly guesswork. We don't have a strong enough understanding of the interrelatedness of phytos-->less free radicals --> less oxidative damage = healthy? Can too many be bad? It's just an area that needs more research, and in the absence of a thorough understanding of what's happening, we see the "supers" being extolled as miracle elixers when we really don't have any solid way of gauging actual, real world efficacy.

ya i would agree with you there, it should be interesting.

honestly i think the 'you are what you eat' thing doesnt get taken seriously enough. i really dont want to be made of double cheeseburgers and diet coke.

some show had a line from a junk food marketing guy that said 'if kids find the link between eating healthy and feeling good we're screwed' and i think they have a good point. those of us on this forum use/abuse substances because they make us feel good (among other things) and for the same reason i eat well
