I'll usually do small gifts initially during early dating, postcards and keychains when I travel. I usually pick my own flowers (got like 10 different colored rose bushes) but typically the girl I'm with knows I struggle financially and doesn't expect gifts, so when I do spend my hard earned, unplentiful money it means more to them and they appreciate the gift more; spent my last $150 on an engagement ring and was dopesick, cigarette-less, and scraping by for a week after but it was a pretty decent 2 year engagement and the look on her face when I proposed still lingers in my mind.
