I would like to find out what mushroom grow kits people have tried and which ones are the best. Thanks for the help!

You probably don't want to hear this, but everything I've read suggests that the kits suck. The only kit I've read about that is decent is the sporechicks kit. If you want to grow em, I'd do it the old fashioned way. A couple hours of reading at the shroomery will have you ready to start cultivating.

Agreed.....dont waste your money on a kit. Just order some spores...everything else you'd ever need is available at your local hardware store/gardening shop.

I can't mention the source I got it from due to forum rules..but I ordered a grow kit from a magic man in the netherlands.
It didn't grow, and when I found somebody online who'd ordered the same kit with the same results I decided to email the supplier.
They sent me an email back apologising and saying they'd had similar problems with all their grow kits and that they'd refund my card.
They never did.
Buy a presure cooker and some canning jars. Then read MMGG.

and that's as far as the conversation went

they sell growing kits at all the mushroom stores in amsterdam, you can buy them online i'm sure, and they're legal to mail to the US if that's a concern.

Grow kits are a waste of money.
All you need is :
Oven
Pressure Cooker
Sterile Spore Syringes (easily ordered online)
A few other misc. materials found at the grocery or hardware store
And Access to the net. http://www.shroomery.org
It can't get much easier than that. Instructions on the Shroomery are in very excelent detail with accompanying photographs to keep even newbies from making most mistakes. If you can keep your work area COMPLETELY clean, you'll grow fine. If you're a slob your cakes will get infected and you'll never have a good harvest. Its all about clenliness when dealing with growing fungus.

I'd also have to say normally grow kits are a waste of money. However McMan at the Shroomery is about to offer something pretty cool in the next month.
The only 'kit' I'd ever look into is something like McMan's Cultivator that he sold for a short time.
But a trip to walmart and some reading is all you need, its easy and inexpensive to build your own kits.

I have experience with the PF Tek method, which is very workable. You have to make sure that EVERYTHING is as sterile as you can make it. Also, the perlite humidity method (couple of inches in a sealed tank with water up to half way) is a very good way to go when the cakes are ready for birth.
Keep watching for contamination (horrible smells, green, red patches, etc.). It can be cut off if it's not too deep but it will take over eventually.
Use plenty of spores to speed up the process because you can always make spore prints when the first yield comes.

The sterility is very important, especially in the cake growing stage. Once the cake is fully colonized its quite good at fighting off contams. If you decide to 'case' your cake in dung/straw/coca fibre etc... Make sure they are sterlie since an unsterile substrate, especially dung can contaminate pretty easily.
As for using lots of spores, I think you should use 1cc in every jar. Syringes can be expensive and its best to make sure you get more jars ready the first time to ensure you get at least a good amount of clean cakes.
If you feel comfortable making your own syringe, you could order spore prints which have way more spores than a spore syringe.
And again, if you have questions, the Shroomery.org has loads of info and very active cultivation message boards.
