What's Good on European and African TV v. Walking the Dead

Aye. You never play the Blood 'n' Guts extension? Your simulated city goes mad cos somebody dumps a load of BZ in the water supply.

I guess it's one of those stylistic choices you're either gonna love or hate. It's used a lot (Sin City, 300 and so on) and I happen to quite like it. Means you can get away with a lot more ridiculously OTT gore without it troubling censors too much. Other alternative would be to either cut back on gore (which would be worse I'd say given the subject matter) or do it realistically (which would make it quite unpleasant to watch and put many people off limiting the potential audience). It makes sense to do it that way for a programme like that. But if you don't like that effect you don't which is fairy muff.

It looks good in Sin City (looks amazing in that actually, not really a comparison at all) and looks decent in 300, but in Spartacus it just looks stupid. They should have spent more money on the cartoon blood budget.

That'd be the difference between an uberbudget film and a TV show I suspect. It's a bit like expecting the FX in Dr Who to be like they are in... whatever something a bit like Dr Who would be if it were a $100m Hollywood movie.

It's just finished, but I really rated The Trip to Italy - I reckon it was a lot better than the first series. It's really subtle and can seem limited to impressions and food on first glance, but if you pay attention it stands out as something commissioned by the BBC (recently) with unusual depth. The last couple of episodes especially (although they have to be taken as part of a sequence).

One for MDB & any other snooker fans out there. Tonight on BBC.4 22.30 'Alex Higgins: The People's Champion'.

Cheers Maxi. Allready got it on VHS.

I spose getting a more up to date broadcast wouldnt be a bad thing, so i will record it in HD, and they might have added a few new things too. The man wasnt just a snooker player, he was a national celebrity. Very often on the front pages of the tabloids due to his life style. An extremely charismatic, flamboyantly and flashily talented but inconsistent snooker player and apparently very much a Jeckyl and Hyde character IRL. You could ask him for his autograph and he'd either snarl "fuck off" at you, or offer to buy you a drink and chat to you for half an hour. RIP Alex Higgins, one of the great characters and influences on my youth.

Technically, he does everything wrong snooker wise, but that makes him all the more interesting.

That Alex Higgins documenatry was brilliant. I was getting it mixed up with another couple of VHS videos about his life story that i have. This was more of tribute to the guy in the wake of his death. I'd allready seen it and burned it to DVD but it was great to watch it again.

I'm finding Game of Thrones really strange. Very hit and miss. It seems to depend entirely on your own mood when watching it how much enjoyment you get out of the episodes. I watched it stoned on cannabinoids last night and it seemed very good watching on that stuff, it really is fucking complicated isnt it, all the plotting and scheming, and each main character having about 3 support characters / advisors/ friends/backstabbers behind them, and still making foolish bad decisions. I should read all the bumff that came with the DVDs and all the extra features to understand the background to all the characters and clans and families a bit more. I havent read or watched any of these extras which is probably a mistake.

I watched the episode with the 'kingslayer' giving his version of events in the hot tub last night. That was a great episode. I like the way that the apparent shits of the show turn out to be not so bad after all. I wonder if anythng good will ever come to light about king Joffrey, idoubt it.Season 3 has been far and away the best so far, season 2 was a bit wtf:? and season 1 was brilliant in momets but i couldnt get past the laboured dialogue "oh moon of my life, my sun and my stars" and all that for a while. 8( I think it could very easily stand a second viewing right the way through from s1 ep 1 straight after ive finished season 3 as so much of it must have just gone over my head.

yeah it quickly became obvious that being an arrogant cunt was just a front for the "imp" and that he was secretly a decent guy. But it wouldnt do to let too many people realise that. It took much longer to see the same about Jamie. Who knows though there will probably be more twists and turns before it finishes.

Pacific is decent,

agreed with rickolasnice, Band of brothers is quite a bit better i reckon

Homeland is deffo worth checking out... True Detective... Sherlock.. Orange is the new black

Comparing the two defeats the point. They are totally different in what they set out to portray.

Both are quality material.

I was reminded by Dan's comment about Firefly to start watching it... had been meaning to for a long time.

Available on Netflix for those who have it. Excellent so far... Joss Whedon is a legend.
