Oh for sure there are multifarious self-important, utterly insignificant wankers in all areas of electronic music same as in any form of music, Sammy. I would disagree that that type of form dominates in any meaningful sense though. As you said, for every ELP there are a million Iggys, Dolls and Reeds and so forth.

Also, the term "IDM" may be vile beyond belief but the tunes that go under that monniker definitely ain't...

Both most defiitelly fall under the "IDM" banner, both blinding tunes. Do they have owt in common beyond not easily fitting any subgenre so got labelled as "IDM"? Dunno but can't see it myself. Just belting tunes is all really.

Will take it on the chin for the former (despite it being demonstrably untrue :p) but even the staunchest of critics can't really describe Autechre as being innofensive disco music - even I struggle to get through some of their more... challenging output 8o

Will spare you the worst excess of "challenging" (although I suspect that'd be the area - if any - you'd be more likely to appreciate if at all) and go with "semi-challenging" and "godly" in that order...

I really do loath the term but can see how could be interpreted as "intelligent" when set against yer standard R1 kinda stuff. Does that mean it can get horribly wanky if allowed to run riot? Absolutely. I can see what you are getting at in terms of bloated prog-rock allusions but would argue that whilst there's a lot of horribly wanky "IDM for the sake of IDM" stuff around there's also true innovation there and that is what gets filtered down and trivialised to the kinda drivel that I suspect is what you are really meaning.

I totally get music is an individual thing - one man's meat really is another man's Poison (somebody likes 'em after all ;)) - but the "it's all just disco" thing is really not so very different from somebody saying that all rock music is Phil Collins.

And just whilst I'm being a bit wanky...

Ambulance - Hymn

... is the kinda thing I mostly tend to think of when I think of "IDM" as a more defined genre. It's really very clever indeed. Is it also wanky? In the ear of the beholder really innit.

I think this is what annoys me about the term IDM most, the paradoxical nature of the type of music it's attatched to. Putting aside personal opinion on whether the music is any good or not, I'm sorry but that just isn't dance music. Throw that on the turntables at a party and everyone is going to fuck off and find something that makes them want to 'get up off a that thing'.

No, I totally agree. That's kinda what I was getting at when saying that that kinda tune is how I would broadly define "IDM" - there's (arguably) plenty of qualities to it but it ain't dance music.

Just in the interests of sharing - there were a fair load on there I'd never come across. It's not a competition and I can't be arsed listing them all.
