What You Listening To? v, Some Cunt Didn't Bother to Include the Numerals Last Time

Tsk, I'm not the only one capable of arranging such things, you know!

Maybe so. Have you ever witnessed me trying to arrange my fucking breakfast though?

I'm listening to Nico, but I'm not going to bother posting links, because anybody who's bothered (one lurker, probably) already has all the stuff, and I always post Nico beause I love her. Like, proper LUV.

The main reason I dislike the more chinstrokey aspects of Techno is that its puritan advocates tend to be the biggest bores going, banging on about Berlin and generally being dismissive of anything vaguely fun (see the RA forum). I can respect it for what it is, but it's comedown music IMO - and will precipitate a comedown if you're out.

On this I completely agree. It's fukkin painful reading PooToob debates on these kinda issues. I appreciate both the "wanky" and "stompin'" ends of the spectrum and don't really differentiate. If it's good it's good. Folk that crawl up their own arses will suffocate up there anyway so leave 'em to it I say. There's genius to be found near everywhere if approached in the right way.

Cabbageboy - Donkey Kong

Cabbageboy - Mod You

Will listen to the above momentarily but am wondering how tunes like...

Steve - (You Need) To Believe (MNLTH Remix)

... fall into all this subgenre malarky. Is certainly housey (got piano riffs and everything :D) and (at a push) I'd probably suggest prog housey at that. Is also acidfunk. Does one negate t'other? Is not an especially amazing tune but as far as genre definitions go I'd be hardpushed to define. For me it's one of Dave Monolith's less good tracks which is still okay but nowt amazing. That has nothing to do with the housey bits though cos that stuff could work - it's just a bit lacklustre in general. But lackluster (prog) house or lacklustre acid? Hmm...

Just to make up for lacklustre *inset subgenre here*...

mntlh - Hugs 2

Oh I dunno - I wouldn't say the first was prog house as I associate that with a more rigidly 4/4 beat. It's nicer than that.

I'm the first to say genre fascism is to be abhorred. This is the reason I've got a knee-jerk reaction to the term 'prog house'. The people who (used to) subscribe to it talked about DJs 'taking you on a journey'8), as if it had some USP in that respect.

The term itself wound me up - like it's a genre that elevates house above and beyond the plebeian.

Same goes for 'IDM'. I love a lot of tunes that get described as that, but I'd prefer they weren't. It's a term that's stuck, but must have been come up with by some people with serious insecurities about their own intellect if they have to describe the music they listen to as 'intelligent'.

It's a shame to see dance music have its Emerson, Lake & Palmer moment, but it was bound to happen. The pioneers are entering their dotage. They innovated, they saw, they left, or became shite. Exactly like rock music. Oh well.

The Dubliners - The Auld Triangle

Used to sing this a capella at open mic nights. People went silent, probably because it was so bad. :D

I got a good few free drinks though, so can't complain.

Not heard the term IDM much, EDM i have. 'Intelligent' music.. that baffles my poor ole brain

A woman from Ladytron was fucking obsessed with me. True. :D

She used to just stand in my line of view wherever I went in the S&G. My female friends warned me about her and made sure we didn't talk. Apparently she used to throw up in the washbasins regularly.

I always thought Ladytron was Electroclash (their early stuff was anyway).

Used to love me a bit of electroclash. Personal favourite from back in the day (and still a stomper):

Vitalic - 'La Rock 01'

I loathe the term "IDM" but it has come to mean a certain style of music I tend to like. It's such a very nebulous (and indeed utterly meaningless) term that I'd prefer there was another one but is the one that's come down to us so so be it :\

I think people mostly use the term "IDM" to suggest they themselves have intelligence and/or somehow superior musical taste. I don't really see it as a musical genre in and of itself.

Aquastep - Oempa Loompa

Muslimgauze - Sari of Acidic Colours

See now it'd be too simplistic to say as a comparison really. ELP were dire in every conceivable sense of the world. The new Dicky D album is brilliant in many ways but (and I fully accept we are decscending into wankery territory here) it's perhaps not quite "enough" to justify an Aphex Twin release given just how extremely Tussy it sounds. Yes it does have more depth and does hang together as an album which Rushup Edge (and associated releases) never quite did - much nearer AFX Analord stuff only with such a different sound it deserved a different monniker. I don't dislike the album - got some blinding tunes even on first listen and plenty I can see growing immensely with repeat listenings - but the fact remains it sounds like a new and more fleshed-out Tuss record. Just seems odd he'd choose this as his long-awaited new "proper" Aphex Twin album is all. Nowt wrong with the actual tunes so much as somewhat bemused by the context is all. ELP remain shite.

Pee Ess: Liked those tunes Allein and Spud posted I said I'd listen to and actually did on this occasion.

Man, you have an impressive array of band anecdotes.

I always thought Ladytron was Electroclash (their early stuff was anyway).

Ah yeah, you may have a point there. And I absoutely love Vitalic - they were amazing at Beat-herder earlier in the year.

Shambles - I'm not talking about the Aphex Twin album - remember that in the heyday of ELP we had Lou, Iggy and the Dolls, not to mention other protopunk legends. Shineola can coincide with shit.

I'm just saying that the ELP aesthetic dominates, as I'm sure you'll agree.

Seconded. Shame it covers a lot of great stuff - to be fair the other terms mooted for it haven't been much better ( e.g.: Braindance:|)
