Her eyes tearing
Threatening to spill over
All because you said “I love you”
Then took it back

With the dense lump in your throat
That never seems to fade
Choking on your words
You wanted to tell her you’re unhappy
Mostly about your heart turning black so easily
But all that other stuff too

On the slow nights you drank away
Instead of thinking of Faulkner, Fante, Fitzgerald
The little poems that kick their heels and laugh
She should have been made ready, aware
Of how deeply you’ve been careworn
Of the predictability of it all
Of how all your poems turn out to be about you

Trying to give notice, you had said
“I can’t give what I don’t have”

Exhaling the last of her affections she said
“Is it just that you want me to hate you?”
“That way you feel validated in believing the world is so shitty?”
“Or are you just really that big of an asshole?”

Without even glancing toward her
You told your drink “a bit of both I’m sure”
