What would you NOT name your kid?

Girls : Piper, Marsha,Donna.Anything that has a soap opera ring to it. For example,,, Hayley, Taylor,Colby. YUK

Boys: Melvin, mortemer,Harold. Feminine names like jeffrey,Kyle, i'm sure there's more. It's getting late.8o

My mom used to work as a labor and delivery nurse when I was an infant, and a few months ago she was telling me about some of the odd names she'd hear mothers call their newborns.

There were two that were my particular favorite though.

The first, was the one that she said occured not just once, but many times. The mother would look at the childs chart and see under sex "female," and in their mind the word read, "feh-mah-lee" and proceeded to make that the name of their child.

The second is the one most unbelieveable. It's a girl! from a 15 year old mother, and after hearing all those beautiful medical terms, she decided that "Vagina Placenta" would make a wonderful name for her darling little angel. :|

The whole trend of using surnames as girls' first names rubs me the wrong way. Hearing a girl named Mackenzie, Morgan, Regan, or Madison makes me wince.

I would not name my daughter Chastity. We all know what happens to them in high school.

My grandmother is from Ireland, and I once made her a bit perturbed by telling her I'm not a big fan of the most common ethnic Irish names. There will be no Patricks or Patricias in my family. No Mollys or Ryans. I like some of the less common ones like Maeve and Kieran, but I never cared for the name Pat one bit.

Not:

- from a trashy TV show
- the most popular name of the year
- too traditionally native (ie Bruce in Australia)
- the name of a long term ex of mine or my partner
- anything really difficult - I don't want my child to have to have the same conversation about his/her name a minimum of 5 times a day for the rest of their life ;)

Yikes, remind me to never tell you guys what my name is! :\

I would definitely avoid names that are commonplace, as well as overly long or fluffy names. Oh, and I wouldn't give my kid a double first name -- I knew a girl named "Elizabeth Alexandra" and I always thought it sounded awkward and a bit pretentious. I like two-syllable names for the most part.

I would never name my kid a Biblical name. There are far too many Michaels, Davids, Johns and Daniels around!!

I have a biblical name but it's pretty rare where I live, except there's a million ways to spell it. Aaron

you wouldn't believe how some people spell it:
Aaron
Arron
Aren
Erin
Airen
aryn

The one name I wouldn't give my kid is Matthew or Michael, there's a million of these around, almost as many as John.

Optus Prime - although I have thought about naming my child Megatron. Seriously he would be one feared fucker in the school yard and what an awesome conversation pointer for when he got old enough for girlies.

names should maximse your kids potential - they should be more then a reference to call a person by.

I would never name my kid food names, like Coco, Muffin, Cookie, its just dumb... its like telling your daughter that it is ok to tell every guy in the world "eat me" and that is not soemthing we want our precious daughters to do. I knew a girl in highschool named Charity... lets just say she was more than charitable with a few dozen of the guys at our school (and some of the girls too) it was a known fact that she had several stds... ick. I would never name my kids anything that is a "virtue" like chastity hope faith etc. it is asking for trouble. DO NOT torture your sons by naming them feminine names, I knew a guy named Stacy, and another guy named Courtney... that is just wrong. Bible names are ok if you are creative with it, use less common ones like Esther, Ezra is cool too, or even Jacob. I am personally going to name my daughter Delia (which is a bible name) but it is not over used. My first name is Rebecca but I go by my middle name Raelyn which is almost unheard of... try looking up the meaning of that one in your baby name books. :)

Biblical names aren't necessarily boring; you gotta think more Old Testament. :)
