What Would you do if you have a Billion Dollars?

Stash it in the Cayman Islands to avoid taxes.

Then buy a reasonable house (something in the $1-1.5 million range), all cash, no mortgage to worry about.

And then I would stay in college forever. Learn as much as I could about every subject possible, attend graduate programs in the subjects that catch my interest, and have sex with undergrads/young graduate students for the remainder of my days.

I don't plan on having any kids, so when I inevitably die, I would stipulate that the remainder of the money be donated to charity. Something having to do with Sub-Saharan Africa, most likely.

I would tell immediate friends and family that i won a bunch of money on the lottery, if word gets out then i'll just say it wasn't much and have spent most if not all of it.
I would pay off the mortgage on this house, and then extra required for the extension that we have so long wanted. This is the house of my childhood dreams, I will try my hardest to keep it.
I would also take a good 7 or 8 of my friends to Zante or somewhere a bit shit for a week in the summer, all expenses paid for.
I might then also take them to some festivals, depends really.
I would pay off 4 years of uni fees in one go + the student loan.
I would then take my family on 2 weeks of holiday in 2 different locations of their decision + a 4-7day holiday for parents for their wedding anniversary.
I think I would also anonymously buy a friends moms house otherwise they have to move back to birmingham to an abusive husband and a shitty ghetto location, but 'd dress it up like a competition or something.

Now I would probably split whatever was left in half and give away one half to charities. The other half would probably still be like 480+ millions (assuming billion = 1kmil). I would get some quality advisors/lawyers and keep it overseas. Keep maybe a mil somewhere accessable and continue with studies. At the end of them, providing I did well maybe get into research or find something I love and just chuck a bunch of money at it. Then take like 5 gap years alternating so I'd be like 40 by the time I'm done with that, hopefully met a gf/wife, get kids (need to spend the money somehow...) and just give them a piss easy life while 'working' but never let them be spoilt. I'd probably get them like a party house somewhere secluded once the oldest is 16 so they can host house parties and stuff, something I tried and failed at.

If there's money left when I died (probably), at least half again would go to charities. The rest could be spent on direct family, but i wouldn't want them to get uber rich super fast and i wouldnt want them knowing i had so much nor them expecting a huge amount given to them when they hit 18/21 etc. I would immediately pay uni/student finance though.

lol.

First step is call my attorney to discuss the best way to keep this & give it to my parents who each get $2mil off-gate with the implication that they never have to work again, and a few close friends who get $1mil or so.
I pay all my debt to everyone.
Hire a chauffeur with a nice whip
Take this girl out on a weekend getaway of her dreams as long as it's not some shit-hole like the beach in a tropical island. I need WiFi, babe.
Give my siblings each $1mil off-gate with the same set-up as my parents.
I don't think my grandparents would want any.
Hell with it, all my family is getting paid.
Donate to homeless shelters, food banks, humane societies, things that help animals, etc. hell I'd probably hire someone to pay for nonviolent drug offenders to get out on bond
Get a new phone
<SNIP - no glorifying drug use in SO please>
Go visit NYC, chill with BLers & drop probably $20grand on clothes
Get housing in NYC
Visit CA to do the above
Meet other BLers
Continue buying loads of clothes (I think ~$150k is where I'd stop for now)
Get rhinoplasty & something to get my complexion looking more like alabaster
Go home & start building the house of my dreams
Then I'd probably just get high & go to festivals & shows all the damn time before I wind up alienating everyone & ODing in one of my houses, probably alone, dressed to the 9s in elegant clothing
:(
I give myself 3 years but that's probably being quite generous. I think I'd need someone to manage my account so I can't just max out my bank's W/D limit each day. That's probably the only way I wouldn't die right away. My parents would be super upset & then fucking pissed when they find out I've willed every damn penny to my cats.

I'd buy a billion people one item each from the Dollar Tree. Wait, I almost forgot about tax. Make that 990 million people.

Alternative:

I'd give my mom and dad 20 million each. My siblings would get 10 million each. I'd find my daughter, wherever she is, and open up an account with 100 million that she would be able to access when she turns 21. All of my friends would get 250k each.

For me:

A nice house, a decent car, a metric shit ton of movies and a home theater similar to this:

I'd also take care of a lot of charities personally, as to make sure that the money doesn't wind up in the wrong hands.

The first 5-10 million I'd invest in some index-fund so it gets me a passive income of ~100k/year (after taxes and inflation), which would be plenty to live off. The next 990 million I'd use to pay off all current debts in my family, but I wouldn't give anyone a bank account with millions on it, it's just not the way I was raised. Well, maybe I'd set up a pension-fund for my parents and siblings, but that's all I'm giving away to friends&family. Obviously I'd throw some huge parties, but I'm not handing out free cash no matter how much I've got. No need to get myself surrounded by vultures.
While traveling around the world, living off my passive income, I'd look out for good (local) projects that deserve some of my fortune. I'd probably die with more than 1 billion on my name (as money earns money) and I'd really have to think hard where all that money would go (but since I wouldn't have to get a job, there's plenty of time for that). A little to my kids, without spoiling them too much, but most of it to science institutions probably, assuming they're still getting as low funding as they do these days.

Living the (super-)rich life is bound to get very boring eventually and then you're no happier than you are today. Perhaps even less happy. I'd rather live a fairly normal life, but without any of the stress of a job or financial problems.

Welcome to bluelight, Chikkenstorm. You'll shed your greenlighter status very soon. We're glad to have you here.

Holy Shmokes! That beat the home theater I have in mind!

Build a fancy sail boat and just sail everywhere I want. Maybe buy a couple of motorcycles that will fit on the boat so my wife and I can ride when we dock.

40 years ago, this thread would have been titled "What Would you do if you have a Million Dollars?"

40 years from now, this thread will be titled "What Would you do if you have a Trillion Dollars?"

Just sayin'

Ahahaha true.. But I think it wouldn't be realistic at this era we are in for now I think.

Go back even further to the early 1900s, the good ol' days. Back when you use could watch two Ernst Lubitsch moving-pictures for a nickle and still have enough left over to split a milkshake at the malt shop with your dame.

dat poodle skirt.

Well, besides the obvious stuff (donate some money, save some money, give some money to my family, etc. ... cuz that is all expected ... but it is not as fun tbh)
OK

First, I'd buy myself a huge house. I'm talking - we've got four bedrooms (one room for me, one room for my bf, then the room that we actually sleep in, then a spare one... just in case!). A huge walkin closet for myself. Three washrooms (again - one for me, one for my bf, and one for guests). A huge backyard. A pool!!! I would love a pool. Lots of trees in the backyard. Pretty landscaping - like rich people have! Hahaha.

Okay then I'd get myself some more pets! Definitely some cats and also another hamster. I would love more pets!!!! <3 Oh I would get fish too! Like a huge aquarium with happy and pretty fish!!!!!!

I'd also probably buy a lot of clothes. Lol. And fun stuff like that. :P

i have fantasized quite often about winning an absurd lottery and they all come down to opening homes/communes throughout the world in poverty ridden places. large estates, run by local poverty ridden women (giving them a home, job) who can love and care for orphans and other unwanted children. self sustaining, growing their own food. top notch education and life skills taught to these children, and upon leaving at their appropriate age (or staying if they wish to become an adult member of the home/commune) leaving with scholarships to colleges for careers that will be fruitful and allow the child to have a productive life. i spent some time in third world countries, seeing kids living on the streets and it is heartbreaking. to give them a chance to live in a beautiful home with a future is the most i could ever do. to do something for communities without resources would be an insanely fulfilling life

Give the family anything they want, of course. And then the ASPCA.

After that, I envision a Castaway experience. With WiFi hopefully.

Swimming, lobstering, reading, paddleboarding...

Either that, or animal sanctuary (which is what I envisioned when I received a settlement a few years ago. I thought my mother was going to strangle me).
